Bude police officer rescues unconscious woman in snow

Storm Emma caused widespread disruption across the South West Photo:

An off-duty police officer has been praised for his quick thinking actions when he rescued a woman found semi-conscious in the snow in Bude.

PC Jack Rickard was walking to the police station on Friday night as Storm Emma was continuing to make for treacherous conditions.

After hearing some faint cries, he found the woman on Bude golf course. She had become disorientated whilst trying to get home.

As she slipped in and out of consciousness, PC Rickard carried her to an ambulance station.

A member of the public also stepped in to help warm her up before they could reach paramedics.

After receiving treatment, she was sent home safe and well.

“The woman was later returned home and suffered no lasting effects, however, without the actions of Jack and the member of public this woman may well have ended up in a much more serious condition.

“This is yet another example of the professional police service that our officers delivered to our community throughout the horrendous conditions last week.”

– DCC Paul Netherton, Devon and Cornwall Police

Despite receiving high praise for his actions, PC Rickard played down his heroics.

"I did what any officer would have done in that situation. I am just happy that the woman was eventually allowed home and was safe and well.”

– PC Jack Rickard, Devon and Cornwall Police
