A teenage girl has died in Tavistock in Devon after being found unwell in the street having believed to have taken an unknown substance.
She was airlifted to Derriford Hospital yesterday afternoon (Saturday 23 June) after being found by ambulance crew near the disused viaduct near Crowndale Road.
The 15-year-old girl died in hospital a short time later. Her next of kin have been informed.
A 14-year-old boy was also taken to the same hospital where he is now recovering.
Police have launched an investigation and believe that both teenagers suffered adverse reactions having taken an as yet known substance.
Inspector Pete Turner said: “We are at the very early stages of the investigation and enquiries are ongoing as to how the substance was obtained.
"I would like to stress that initial enquiries show that this is an isolated incident involving these two young people and we do not believe that there is any wider risk to the Tavistock community.
"We would however urge all parents and carers to speak to their children and young people about the risks of taking unknown substances.”
Officers have seized an unknown substance from the scene and this will be tested to find out what it is.
Police would like to speak to anyone who has information, including anyone who was in the area around the viaduct/Crowndale Road yesterday.
