Minister of Universities says he's confident students still want to go to university
Across the country, fewer people are applying for university. In this region, that figure is even higher. David Willets MP, the Minister for Universities is confident students are still applying for university and says it is a competitive process.
He says there have been more university applications this year than places available.

There's been a fall of more than 12% in the number of people from our region wanting to go to University.

Thousands of A-Level students had an anxious wait this morning as they got their exam results. For many, it decides their next career move. With a 12% decrease in University applications this year, more young people could be looking at alternative routes. David Woodland was in Taunton:
A-level A grades down nationally
The proportion of A-levels scoring at least an A grade has fallen for the first time in more than 20 years, official figures showed today.

Full pass rates for all A-level subjects
Today's A-level figures show that the overall A* to E pass rate has risen for the 30th year in a row.
98% of exams achieved at least an E, compared to 97.8% last year.
- English: 21.2 percent of candidates achieving an A grade or above, down from 22.3 last year.
- Maths: 43.9 percent of candidates achieving an A grade or above, down from 44.7 last year.
- Science: 28.6 percent of Biology candidates got an A grade or above, Chemistry 34.4 percent, Physics 31.9 percent.

Cornwall College has 98% pass rate
Cornwall College in St Austell has reported a 98% pass rate for 16 to 18 year olds at A2 level.
Zoe Bilkey (above) dropped out of school at 14 due to anxiety issues and then returned at 16 to take GCSEs and A-levels. She's just got into university of Brighton to study English Literature.

It's a nervous wait for thousands this morning as A Level results are announced.
It's one of the most emotional and important days for students, as they decide their next career move.
Students starting university this Autumn are said to face total costs of £55,000 if they study in the South West.
Recent figures show a 12% drop in the number of university applications in the South West on last year. Plymouth's Tom Daley will be collecting an A Level Photography result.
