An ancient ceremony takes place in North Devon today as Barnstaple holds its fair proclamation.
The town is England's oldest borough and was granted a charter to hold an annual fair in 1556 but its origins date back to 930AD.
A proclamation ceremony will be held in the town's Guildhall at 11am followed by a procession through the High Street where the charter is read aloud at each of the gates to the town centre.
Rather than a travelling fair of animals and wares, these days a funfair is held finishing with the annual carnival on Saturday.
