School "shocked and saddened" by teacher's child abuse conviction

The school of former teacher who was today convicted of child abuse say they are "shocked and saddened" by the findings of the court case.

36 year old Keith Ruby from Axebridge has been jailed for 10 years for sexual offences committed between 2005 and 2006. He was a rugby coach and teacher at Sidcot School.

The school have released this statement:

At Sidcot School we are all deeply shocked and saddened by the findings of this court case and our thoughts are with all those who have been affected by the actions of Keith Ruby. He has clearly broken the trust placed in him as a teacher by students, parents and the School in his conduct and it is right that he has been called to account through this trial.

It was made clear during the trial, particularly by defending barrister Michael Fitton QC, that the abuse happened after Keith Ruby left Sidcot in February 2005, and that none of the abuse took place on school premises.

However, we hold our duty of care to students as paramount and have cooperated at every stage with the authorities in their investigations. Our safeguarding procedures, both now and at the time of these incidents, are completely compliant and all necessary checks on the suitability of Keith Ruby to work with children were carried out by the School.

However, unfortunately, no vetting system can guarantee that every paedophile is identified. We are confident that Sidcot offers the greatest possible protection to its students and that the School has a justified reputation for the quality of its pastoral care, where staff work tirelessly to protect and nurture the welfare of students.

A former Somerset teacher has been jailed for 10 years for sexual offences committed between 2005 and 2006.

Keith Ruby, aged 36, from Axbridge, was a rugby coach and teacher. He was initially charged with 20 offences, but pleaded not guilty.

Following a two week trial last month the jury at Taunton Crown Court found him guilty of 16 of the offences, which included sexual activity with a child and inciting a child. Detective Chief Inspector Richard Kelvey led the investigation and on sentencing said:

"The sentence handed to Keith Ruby today highlights the severity of the crimes he committed against a vulnerable child whilst in a position of trust.

"This conviction has been achieved because of the tremendous courage of this victim and his family. It has taken great bravery to finally come forward and give evidence at this trial.

"Keith Ruby is a manipulative man who insinuated himself into the lives of this victim and his family. He regularly sat at their dinner table and was welcomed into their lives as a trusted friend, teacher and coach to their son. His betrayal and abuse has left them completely distraught.

"The sentence passed by His Honour Judge Jones today will ensure that Keith Ruby is finally behind bars for a minimum of 10 years and, as a managed sex offender for the rest of his life, will never work with children again."
