Plymouth is to throw its hat in the ring to become next year's UK City of Culture. The competition to find the next cultural ambassador for the UK was opened today and Plymouth has confirmed it will be one of the bidders.
Led by the Plymouth Culture Board, the bid will showcase Plymouth's redevelopment and the work that is being done to encourage people into the city and raise aspirations.
Plymouth City Council and the University are among the partners of the Culture Board and have both pledged £20,000 each to the scheme, on the proviso that this is matched by private funding.
The competition, launched today by culture Minister Ed Vaizey, is designed to use culture and creativity as a catalyst to transform communities and showcase artistic talent.
