A 25 year old Cheltenham man who was arrested following a police operation investigating alleged racists tweets to Northampton Town footballers has now been bailed to return to Cheltenham Police Station on May 22, pending further enquiries.
The incident follows the League Two Play Off semi final between Cheltenham Town and Northampton
A 25 year old man from Cheltenham has been arrested after two police forces began a joint investigation into alleged racists tweets towards Northampton Town footballers.
Gloucestershire Police and Northamptonshire Police launched their inquiry yesterday following the play off semi final between Cheltenham Town and Northampton.
The man was arrested under the malicious communications act. He was subsequently also arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence of intentionally causing harassment, alarm or distress.
He remains in police custody in Cheltenham today pending further inquiries.
Cheltenham Town have missed out on a Wembley final after losing their play-off semi-final with Northampton.
The Robins were 1-0 down after the first leg, so needed to score twice at Whaddon Road. They created many chances, but couldn't find the net.
Northampton goalkeeper Lee Nicholls was Man of the Match with a string of great saves, including a 15th minute penalty stop from Marlon Pack.

Cheltenham Town have missed out on a Wembley final after losing the second leg of their play-off semi-final with Northampton.
Already trailing 1-0 from the first leg, Cheltenham knew they had to score twice.
It was a frantic start to the game, and things looked good for the hosts when the referee awarded a 15th minute penalty after Russell Penn was brought down in the box. But Marlon Pack's spot kick was superbly saved by Lee Nicholls.
In the 27th minute, Northampton scored with their first real attack of the evening. It was a stunning volley from the edge of the area by Luke Guttridge which dipped beyond Scott Brown.
The Robins tried desperately for a goal. Kaid Mohamed's header crashed against the bar, and goalkeeper Nicholls pulled off several more good saves to earn his side a Wembley date with Bradford City on May 18th.
Cheltenham striker Paul Benson admitted his team were fortunate to only concede one goal in their play off semi-final at Northampton, but says that the tie is now "nicely poised" for Sunday's return match at Whaddon Road.
Cheltenham's manager Mark Yates is happy that his side only has a one goal deficit to recover following last night's League Two play-off first leg match against Northampton.
The second leg is at Whaddon Road on Sunday.
