A controversial order banning dogs from St Ives' beaches comes into affect today (1 May 2013). The 24-hour ban applies to Porthgwidden, Porthmeor and Porthminster while an 8am to 7pm ban also comes into force on Harbour beach.

A controversial order banning dogs from most beaches in St Ives in the summer has started.

An action group opposing the ban staged a protest at one of the beaches, but said it wouldn't break the law. It hopes to persuade the new town council which will be elected tomorrow to overturn the measure. Our Cornwall correspondent Steve Hardy reports.

A controversial order banning dogs from St Ives' beaches comes into affect today.

The 24 hour ban applies to Porthgwidden,Porthmeor and Porthminsterwhile an 8am to 7pm ban also comes into force on Harbour beach.

St Ives Dog Owners Group who oppose the ban are planning a demo this weekend. There will be similar dog bans coming into place on other beaches in the region, including Sidmouth and Instow.
