West Country badger cull

A cull of around 5,000 badgers can now legally get underway in Somerset and Gloucestershire as the Government tries to stop the spread of Bovine TB in cattle. If it is a success, it is expected to be rolled out in other parts of the country.

MPs begin debating the controversial badger cull

MPs have begun debating the controversial cull of badgers in two parts of the West.

Labour, which claims that shooting badgers to control TB in cattle is ineffective, has put down a motion calling for it to be stopped.

The cull became legal in parts of Somerset and Gloucestershire at the weekend. However the Environment Select Committee says an alternative using vaccines is not yet available.

An Opposition Day debate on badger culling as a means of preventing bovine TB will take place in the House of Commons today.

Trial culls in parts of Somerset and Gloucestershire became legal at the beginning of the month.

The Badger Trust has released a video which they say shows the strentgh of opposition to culling.

DEFRA says about 5,000 badgers will be shot during the pilot cull period. If it's a success, it's expected to be rolled out in other parts of the country. But protesters say they will be out in force to try to disrupt the cull.
