Bristol Rovers ended a run of two straight defeats with a goal-less draw against Southend at the Memorial Stadium last night.

John-Joe O'Toole had the Pirates' best chance with a header, but Shrimpers' goalkeeper Daniel Bentley denied the midfielder his 16th goal of the season.

The visitors almost won the game with five minutes left on the clock, but substitute Jamar Loza headed over from just four yards out.

Rovers move up to 17th in League Two - five points ahead of the relegation zone before this afternoon's matches.

Bristol City sign Huddersfield striker on loan

Bristol City have signed Huddersfield Town striker Martin Paterson on loan until the end of the season.

The 26-year-old Northern Ireland international could make his debut against West Country rivals Swindon Town today, along with another loan signing, Watford defender Nyron Nosworthy.

Yeovil Town could move out of the Championship relegation zone if they can beat Sheffield Wednesday at Huish Park.

In League One, Bristol City's relegation battle continues away at Shrewsbury, who are only three points below City at the bottom of the table. Swindon Town host MK Dons at the County Ground.

In League Two, free-scoring Plymouth Argyle will provide a stern test for Bristol Rovers, and Cheltenham Town head to Portsmouth.
