A Plymouth based teenager has tonight become a World Champion. Ruta Meilutyte - who is Lithuanian - won the Women's 100 metres breaststroke final in Barcelona.

The 16-year-old won gold with a time of 1:04.42 - just 7/10ths of a second outside the world record she set in last night's semi-final.

The Plymouth College student trains at the Life Centre, and has been based in the city since she was 13.

Plymouth swimmer Ruta Meilutyte has broken the 100m breaststroke world record in the World Championship semi-finals.

Ruta will compete in the final which takes place on Tuesday evening.
