Silent protest held for Devon man detained in Russia

A silent protest has been held in London this afternoon for Kieron Bryan, from North Devon.

The video journalist is being held in Russia in connection with a Greenpeace protest.

He was filming on board the Arctic Sunrise when the boat was involved in a protest over drilling back in September.

He's being held in prison while he awaits trial for hooliganism.

A petition of 15,000 signatures has been handed into the Russian Embassy calling for his release.

Kieron's family were in London to support the protest. They want him released immediately and have held a silent protest outside the Russian Embassy this afternoon:

The mother of British journalist Kieron Bryan said she hopes "common sense, and a sense of fair play and justice" will prevail.

Speaking as at a silent protest outside the Russian Embassy in London, Ann Bryan said the country has made its point and said her son should be released.

"Punishment should fit the crime and for what happened that day I think they've more than served their punishment," she said.Adding: "I just hope that common sense, and a sense of fair play and justice, will come out of this."

The videographer and 29 other people were arrested aboard a Greenpeace boat protesting against oil drilling and charged with piracy in September.

The thirty men and women have been moved from a detention centre in Murmansk to prison in St Petersburg

Russia’s Investigative Committee recently announced that the piracy charges would be replaced with charges of hooliganism but they have yet to be lifted.

A silent protest is being held outside the Russian embassy in London today for British videographer Kieron Bryan who is being detained in Russia.

Bryan was part of a group of 30 aboard a Greenpeace boat in the Arctic protesting against oil drilling, when they were arrested and charged with piracy in September.

Russia’s Investigative Committee recently announced that the piracy charges would be replaced with charges of hooliganism but they have yet to be lifted.
