A van driver has escaped serious injury when his vehicle crashed through a wall on a bridge and plunged 15 feet into the River Tamar.

Police closed the narrow Newbridge crossing at Gunnislake in Cornwall after the accident at around 9am this morning.

The 30 year old driver was taken to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth for treatment. Diversions have been set up, and the bridge will be closed for at least a week.
