Lightning strike causes huge blaze in South Molton

A lightning strike is thought to be the cause of a house fire in North Devon early on Saturday morning. Residents of the property in South Molton described hearing a massive bang and their home shook.

A lightning strike has caused a huge fire at a house in North Devon.

Fire Crews were called to North Road in South Molton at 4:30am this morning after reports the roof of a property was on fire.

Three fire engines from South Molton, Barnstaple and Chulmleigh attended. A fourth fire engine from Barnstaple as well as the incident command vehicle and a supporting fire appliance from Ilfracombe were requested.

Further assistance was provided by crews from Bideford and Witheridge, as well as the welfare unit from Crediton, and the British Red Cross Fire and Emergency Support Services team.

The owners of the house evacuated the property without injury.

By 6am, the fire was contained to the roof and first floor.

The road is currently closed, but is expected to re-open shortly.
