Drivers are being warned to avoid the area completely when repairs are carried out to the Long Ashton bypass near Bristol.
Cllr Elfin ap Rees from North Somerset District Council said people should take alternative routes if travelling to Bristol from the West:
There are warnings tonight of commuter chaos for thousands of drivers using one of the West's busiest routes over the next six months.
The A370 Long Ashton by-pass, the main route into Bristol from the west, is to become a one-way road as a viaduct underneath in repaired. Those living nearby fear their roads will suffer as a result.
The A370 Long Ashton bypass in Bristol is closed westbound for bridge maintenance work between the Park and ride and Cambridge Batch junction until 11.30am
It is to allow work on the Yanley Viaduct to take place. Closed heading away from Bristol. The opposite side (towards Bristol) is still open and will be until 11:30 each day.
The closures start today, Monday 11 August and are expected to continue until 11 February 2015.
Diversion - for light vehicles: via Clarken Combe, Clevedon Road and down Belmont Hill. For larger vehicles: via the A369 and M5.
