A former government advisor and Muslim community leader has appeared at Bristol Crown Court charged with a number of rapes, assaults and threats to kill.

Farooq Siddique, who has previously advised the government on tackling extremism, has been charged with three counts of raping a woman in Bristol between 2009 and 2014, as well as assaulting the same woman in Cheltenham in 2010 and in Gloucester between 2013 and 2015.

He told the court he would plead "absolutely not guilty" and was given bail. A plea and directions hearing has been scheduled for 8th February next year and his trial is due to start on 4th April.

A former government adviser and prominent Muslim community leader has appeared at Bristol Magistrates Court charged with a number of rapes, assaults and threats to kill.

Farooq Siddique, who has previously advised the government on tackling extremism, has been charged with three counts of raping a woman in Bristol between 2009 and 2014.

He is also charged with assaulting the same woman in Cheltenham in December 2010 as well as making threats to kill.

Siddique is accused of assaulting the same woman in Gloucester between 2013 and 2015.

He told ITV News he looked forward to proving himself innocent in court:

The 46-year-old from Bristol was released on bail and will appear at Bristol Crown Court on 18 August.

Farooq Siddique, who has previously advised the government on tackling extremism, has been charged with three counts of rape, two of assault causing actual bodily harm and making a threat to kill.

The 46-year-old was regional manager of a nationwide programme to tackle radicalisation and extremism and was also a Muslim university chaplain and a Sunday school teacher.

Mr Siddique took part in a number of documentaries and was spokesman for the Bristol Muslim Cultural Society who regularly commented on Islamic issues.

Mr Siddique, who is a management consultant from Easton, Bristol, is due to appear before the city's magistrates later this month.

No details of the allegations have been made public.

We can confirm that Farooq Siddique has been charged with three counts of rape, one count of threats to kill and two counts of assault causing actual bodily harm.

He is currently on bail and is due before Bristol Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, July 28.
