Wiltshire man is named Apprentice of the Year

Steven Davey from Staverton in Wiltshire has won the title of Apprentice of the Year.

He received the award - and a cheque for £1,000 - at the Federation of Master Builders Awards in London yesterday. The 25-year-old carpentry apprentice studied at Swindon College and now works for Chippenham-based Stonewood Builders.

Cornwall's Eden Project unveils its biggest ever apprenticeship scheme today.

More than 20 apprentices will be taken on at the end of the month. They'll work in a variety of areas including horticulture, vehicle maintenance and hospitality.

The scheme is being run in partnership with Cornwall College and the Edge Foundation.

Pensions Minister tries out life as an apprentice

Steve Webb, the MP for Thornbury and Yate, will find out what it's like to be an apprentice today. He's swapping his role of Minister for Pensions to try his hand with a local financial company on their pensions help desk.

The aim is to highlight how apprenticeships are available across a range of business sectors, not just in traditional manufacturing work.

Apprentices in Devon get down to business

David Cameron said today that he wants apprenticeships to be the accepted alternative for youngsters who decide not to go to university, and that he wants the training schemes to be a core part of rebuilding our economy.

He was speaking at the start of National Apprentice Week. John Andrews has been to see how it's working for some youngsters in Devon.

South West Apprentice of the Year

A design engineer from North Devon has become the South West Apprentice of the Year and is now hoping to win the national title.

Daniel Lawson from Ilfracombe won the regional award for his work encouraging more young people into apprenticeships. His firm TDK-Lamda is now encouraging its worldwide employees to vote online for Dan to become the overall winner.
