The former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Carey has resigned after a review into child abuse.

Lord Carey has now left his last remaining formal role in the church.

He was criticised in an independent review of the church's handling of abuse carried out by Bishop Peter Ball.

In 2015, Peter Ball, the former Bishop of Lewes and Gloucester from Somerset, was jailed for 32 months for sexually abusing boys and young men.

The Bishop of Gloucester will become the first female Bishop to take a seat in the House of Lords.

A formal ceremony will be held today to introduce Rachel Treweek to parliament. She will be supported by Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby. Bishop Treweek became the first female Bishop in July.

Rachel Treweek will become Gloucestershire's first woman bishop when she is consecrated by the Archbishop of Canterbury today.

She will take on the most senior role of all female bishops and becomes the first woman in the Church of England to be consecrated as a diocesan bishop.

Hundreds of well wishers are expected to make the journey from Gloucestershire.
