Lifeguards will begin be patrolling two somerset beaches from today for over the summer. The RNLI will be based at Burnham-on-sea and Berrow beaches over the coming months.

Sedgemoor District Council has in the past provided trained lifeguards in Burnham, but this will mark the first time a lifeguard service has been offered in Berrow.

Carnival organiser hopes volunteers will come forward

They are calling it "carnival in crisis". The Highbridge and Burnham-on-Sea Carnival Association says that their annual November carnival is in danger if they cannot get more volunteers to help out.

The event attracts around 100 floats and walking entries and raises thousands of pounds for charity.

Phil New, the event's co-ordinator, says that if people don't come forward to help, the event could be in danger. There's an emergency meeting tonight in Burnham at the Ritz social club where they are hoping to attract new volunteers.
