Ethnic minority vote could decide 2015 general election

Voters from ethnic minority communities could decide who wins the next general election, according to research.

Cross-party group Operation Black Vote found that there are 168 marginal seats in England and Wales where ethnic minority voters out number the majority of the sitting MP.

It is thought the findings are linked to a radical demographic shift, the Guardian reported.

The findings will be of concern to the Tories who received 16% of the ethnic minority vote in the last election in comparison to Labour who secured 68%.

The constituencies in question are in both urban and suburban areas.

For example:

  • Bristol East: Labour have a majority of 3,772 and an ethnic minority electorate of 11,420
  • Cardiff Central: Liberal Democrats have a majority of 4,570 and an ethnic minority electorate of 12,445
  • North Warwickshire: Conservative majority of 36 votes and an ethnic minority electorate of 3,381
