Farmers cleared of health and safety charges

Two men have walked free from court today after being cleared of charges in relation to a freak accident which led to the death of a member of pop group ELO.

Mike Edwards was driving on the A381 near Totnes between Harbetonford and Halwell in September 2010 when his van was hit by a 50 stone bale of hay.

Today two farmers were cleared of health and safety charges in connection with the tragedy.

Men acquitted over ELO musician's death

Two men have been acquitted of health and safety charges after the death of ELO rock star Mike Edwards.

Mr Edwards was driving on the A381 near Totnes in 2010 when a 600kg hay bale rolled down a steep field and crushed his vehicle. The former ELO cellist died instantly.

Brian Burden of Bickleigh Farm, Halwell, and Russell Williams of Forces Cross, Blackawton, denied two health and safety charges and today a jury in Plymouth found them not guilty.
