Cuts to disability allowances 'a joke'

A Royal Marine who lost an arm and a leg while serving on the frontline in Afghanistan has criticised government plans on cuts in disability allowance.

Ben McBean, who's from Plymouth, served with Taunton-based 40 Commando. He fears he'll lose his benefits under the plans and says they are 'a joke'.

The government says the new system is fairer and gets the money to those who need it most.

More than 300 pasty manufacturers will be protesting outside Downing Street against the new 'Pasty Tax' this morning. Representatives from the baking industry will be joined by Cornish MPs. They'll present a petition of almost 500 thousand signatures against the move.

A group of South West MPs have failed to change the Government's plans to add VAT to pies and pasties.

In a vote in the house of commons earlier this evening ministers saw of opposition to the proposals by a margin of just 35.
