81 prisoners abscond from Leyhill since 2010

A search is underway for a man who has absconded from Leyhill Prison in South Gloucestershire.

Wayne Head, who's serving a lengthy sentence for a robbery he committed 6 years ago, went missing from the open prison over the weekend.

He was last seen boarding a train to Plymouth yesterday morning.

And it seems he's not the only one to leave - figures shown to ITV News West County reveal that dozens of inmates have walked out of Leyhill in recent years.

Since 2010, 81 prisoners have absconded, including 8 murderers, 1 rapist and 26 burglars. Most were recaptured within a few days, but one burglar is still at large.

The Ministry of Justice says things are improving, but the area's councillor says people living nearby are concerned.
