Special summit to tackle seagulls

A seagull summit has been held in our region to discuss the problem the birds are having in many of our towns and cities.

East Devon District Council organised the event after receiving a number of complaints from the public about seagulls messing up the rubbish, fouling buildings and in some cases being aggressive, particularly to anyone walking along with food in their hands.

Battling the menace of seagulls

A seagull summit has been held to help people and businesses affected by the birds.

In many places seagulls have become an aggressive nuisance - scavenging food and nesting on rooftops.

East Devon District Council organised the event in Sidmouth after complaints from the public about the birds.

Councillor Tom Wright from East Devon District Council says the warmer summer months led to more birds being fed.

Murder investigation launched

A murder investigation has been launched after a 71-year-old man died at a hotel in Devon.

Police were called to the Black Horse Hotel in Sidmouth at about 10 o'clock last night [Thursday].

Despite efforts by officers and paramedics, the elderly man was pronounced dead a short time later.

A 41-year-old man has been arrested and is in custody in Exeter.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact 101.

A million flowers for Sidmouth

An investment banker has left £2.3 million to a town in Devon - with instructions the money is spent on a million flowers.

Keith Owen travelled the world but always returned to Sidmouth. So when he developed lung cancer, he decided to hand his estate to the civic society to keep the resort "beautiful".
