Flights from the Isles of Scilly to the mainland were delayed this afternoon after a light aircraft overshot the runway.
St Mary's Airport was shut for a time when the plane carrying four people went through a hedge and ended up in a field. No-one was injured. One of those who saw the crash was Adam Smith who spoke to us over the phone:
A private plane overshot the runway at St Mary’s airport on the Isles of Scilly this afternoon, coming to a stop in a field above Old Town. Four people were on board, and all managed to exit the plane safely. Fire crews remain at the scene.
The airport say they will issue a statement later today.
A plane has overshot the runway at St Mary's Airport. According to the island's radio station Radio Scilly, the plane has crashed through a hedge and is resting, facing the sea. There are no reports of any injuries. Fire and ambulance crews are currently attending and airport is currently closed.
