Plymouth swimmer becomes European champion

Plymouth Leander's newest star brought home a gold and silver medal at the Short Course Championships in Israel.

The swimmer helped the Dutch team storm to victory in the 200m Medley Relay where she swam an impressive 29.27 second breaststroke leg - breaking the previous European Senior Record.

She also took silver in the 100m breaststroke individual final, and came painfully close to a medal, finishing in fourth, in the 50m final.

Leander coach Jon Rudd was invited to work alongside Nijhuis on the Netherlands team to assist her over the five days of competition against Europe’s best.

At the same time a further young hopeful from the club was representing Great Britain at the Ontario International Meet in Canada.

Laura Stephens was rewarded with three silver medals in the 50m, 100m, and 200m Butterfly finals.
