Stones thrown at Torbay mosque in suspected hate crime

Police are investigating after a suspected hate crime at a mosque in Devon.

Officers were called to reports of three men hurling stones and using abusive language at Torbay Islamic Centre in Torquay.

It happened around the time of early prayers on Saturday 27 May at 3:40am.

All three men are thought to be in their twenties.

Police will be reviewing CCTV in the area - and are appealing for any CCTV footage from residents around the time of the incident.

Man suffers life-threatening injuries after major flat fire

A man has been left with life-threatening injuries after a major fire in Torquay overnight.

Up to 40 firefighters tackled the blaze in three flats on Fore Street when flames were seen bursting out the first floor window at around 10pm.

A man was taken to Torbay District Hospital with life-threatening injuries, and was later transferred to Swansea Hospital.

No further injuries have been reported and 12 residents have been re-housed by Torbay council.

Police say there is likely to be traffic disruption due to road closure at Fore Street whilst the fire service investigate the incident.

Tall ships line up in Torbay for trans-Atlantic race

Tall ships are lining up in Torbay for the start of a 10,000 mile race across the Atlantic. They're due to leave around 2pm to head for the official start line some five miles offshore.

The vessels will first head to Sines in Portugal and then race to Bermuda. Then they will head north to Boston, USA and on to Canada, where they will converge on Quebec City, to celebrate Canada 150 – the anniversary of the Canadian confederation. After that, the ships vessels sail to Nova Scotia before racing back to the final port of Le Havre in France.

The Rendez-vous 2017 Tall Ships Regatta is organised by Sail Training International.The whole event is scheduled to take five months.
