Gloucester woman wins first medal of Glasgow games

Jodie Stimpson (Gold) and Vicky Holland (Bronze), from Gloucester were the first to win medals for England

The West Country got its first medal of the Commonwealth Games at lunchtime when Gloucester's Vicky Holland won bronze in the women's triathlon.

She came third in the sweltering Glasgow sun in what is a truly tough event whatever the weather. The race was won by her England team mate Jodie Stimpson. They were the first medals to be won at the Games.

Triathlon: Cycle crash ruins Holland's medal hopes

Gloucester born Vicky Holland was involved in a crash on her bike in the women's triathlon final this morning.

The 27-year old had a collision on the first lap of the cycling event near Buckingham Palace.

Despite cuts to her knee, she continued to finish in 26th position overall.

Norway's Nicola Spirig won gold in dramatic fashion. A sprint to the finishing line with Sweden's Lisa Norden needed a photo finish to decide the winner.

Australia's Erin Densham was third, with GB's World Champion Helen Jenkins finishing fifth.
