93 people are being made redundant at a slaughterhouse in Wiveliscombe in Somerset. Karro Food Group plans to cut slaughter operations at the site and is reviewing the future of the base.
At present, the firm is continuing its butchery and meat-curing operations, keeping 20 jobs. The firm, which is in consultation with staff and unions over the job losses, says the slaughterhouse is not big enough to operate profitably.
Campaigners in the small town of Wiveliscombe are trying to get access to their old town hall which has been boarded up by the Co-op for the past 50 years. The supermarket has a store below the old town hall but doesn't use the large rooms above.
It has been reluctant to allow townspeople access in the past but after months of negotiations that might be about to change. The town hall is right in the centre of the tiny town, and dominates the square.
