Hundreds of people are expected to attend the historic Lammas Fair in Exeter today. The colourful ceremony of the Proclamation of the Fair dates back more than 900 years and Exeter is one of the few cities to maintain the tradition.
In a slight break from tradition, this year’s pageant starts with a procession at 11.30am led by the Lord Mayor of Exeter, Cllr Rob Newby, from Southernhay. He’ll lead it through the city centre to Northernhay Gardens where the proclamation will take place.
The ceremony, which celebrates the wheat harvest, includes the raising of a white glove as a sign of peace.
