A 72-year-old man has been attacked in his pub in Tavistock after a burglar broke in in the early hours of this morning [Tuesday].
The elderly landlord was struck with an iron bar after the offender wrenched open the door to the Market Inn in Whitchurch Road at around 3:30am.
Police said the victim received significant bruising and injury to his arm as he tried to protect his head and body.
The till had been broken into but it is unknown whether money was taken.
This is a shocking and disturbing incident on an elderly and vulnerable man who is well-regarded in the local community. The offender has shown absolutely no hesitation to use violence, fortunately the victim has sustained only superficial injuries but the intensity of the attack could have led to much worse.
Police are appealing for anybody with information to get in touch.
