A post mortem report has revealed that the Olympic sailor Andrew Simpson from Sherborne in Dorset died from blunt trauma with drowning.
Mr Simpson won a silver medal at the Olympics last year.
He was killed while training for the America's Cup in San Francisco in May.
The city's Chief Medical Examiner found extensive bruises to his head and neck.
The boat he was on broke in two and capsized. He was trapped beneath the wreckage.
