Coastguards are warning not to wade across mud at west country beaches to reach the sea after a father and son were rescued next to Brean Down yesterday. The two men were spotted covered head to toe in mud and struggling to walk.

They were rescued by Burnham's BARB Search and Rescue team.

Coastguard officer Ian Jefferies said: "The incident serves as a timely warning about the potential dangers of wading across the mud to reach the sea - our advice is always not to put yourself in danger."
