Unemployment rises in South West

Unemployment in the South West has increased by 3,000 in the quarter to May, official figures have revealed. According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), a total of 138,000 people were unemployed in the region between March and May, a rise of 2.2%.

Unemployment falls nationally to 2.12 million

Despite the latest unemployment figures showing a rise of 3,000 in the South West, nationally unemployment fell by 121,000 to 2.12 million.

The number of people claiming jobseeker's allowance last month fell by 36,300 to 1.04 million, said the Office for National Statistics.

Average earnings increased by 0.3% in the year to May, 0.5% down on the previous month.
