A man has died after his car crashed and ended up in the water at Slapton Ley near Kingsbridge last night.
Emergency services were called to the nature reserve at Torcross just after midnight after reports that a car had travelled across grassland and come to rest in the water.
The male driver was treated by paramedics but was pronounced deceased at the scene a short time later.
Formal identification has not yet taken place, although next of kin are being informed.
The A379 was closed but reopened around 7.20am today.
Police divers will be carrying out a search of the submerged vehicle and surrounding area this morning to confirm there are no other casualties.
Officers from the Force Serious Collisions Investigation Unit have conducted an examination of the scene and are investigating the circumstances of the collision.
