Exeter City fell at the final hurdle in their bid for promotion as they lost the League Two play-off final to Blackpool at Wembley.
Paul Tisdale's side made the worst possible start and were behind within 2 minutes as Brad Potts gave Blackpool the lead after a well-worked move. Exeter grew into the game and were level before half time thanks to a calm lob from David Wheeler.
But in the second half Blackpool took control through a Mark Cullen tap in.Ollie Watkins then headed over late on as Blackpool held on for victory. The defeat means a long journey home for those travelling back to Devon this evening but they may be consoled by their side's turnaround this season.
As late as December 17th they had not seen a home win at St James Park but a remarkable run of form and a late winner in the play off semi finals brought them to Wembley.
This game was a step too far though and it may be even harder to stomach defeat given the Grecians' bitter rivals Plymouth Argyle did secure promotion.
There was also no Exeter double in London play off finals as Paul Tisdale's team were unable to emulate their neighbours the Exeter Chiefs who won their play off final against Wasps at Twickenham on Saturday.
