Man set fire to home as people slept inside

Alan Smith

A man has been jailed for setting fire to a home in Fishponds, Bristol with people still asleep inside.

55 year old Alan Smith was convicted of arson after he bombarded a ground floor flat with homemade petrol bombs.

He had targeted the home because of an ongoing feud with one of the residents.

A window frame and curtains were engulfed in flames but further petrol thrown into the property by Smith failed to ignite.

“There was enough combustible material within the flat that it could’ve easily resulted in fatal consequences for those in the flat and those in surrounding flats. It was only luck that the fire did not take hold."

– Det Carl Spicer, Avon and Somerset

He was sentenced to 5 years and 10 months and Bristol Crown Court this morning (June 13th).
