In 2005, ITV teamed up with the Big Lottery Fund to give away lottery funding to projects that will benefit local communities across the UK.
Over the last four years we have awarded more than £18 million to a total of 318 projects across the UK. In this the fifth year of the People’s Millions we have 69 awards of £50,000 to give away – a total of nearly £3.5 million.
The aim of The People’s Millions programme is to fund projects that help people to transform or enjoy their environment or communities. That means local facilities and public and green spaces. Priority will be given to projects that also get people involved in their local community, help people in the community who are most in need and are original and imaginative.
The closing date for entry for this year’s competition is noon on Friday May 15th. Between May and November ITV and the Big Lottery Fund will assess and short-list the finalists for a public vote in November. This is when over a number of evenings short films will be broadcast in the 6pm regional news programmes and viewers get the chance to vote for the ones they think should receive funding. On each night two projects go ‘head-to-head’ in a public vote and the project winning the most votes out of the pair will be declared that day’s winner. There will also be a bonus award in each region which will be offered to the project that scored the most votes during the week but did not win a head-to-head vote.
