Hollywood superstars Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock found themselves playing Blind Date when they recorded The Jonathan Ross Show with Cilla Black.
During the show, which will air tonight on ITV at 10.15pm, the acting legends were asked to answer some of the questions which were used on Cilla’s show, Blind Date.
Sandra was asked: “If you were to describe yourself as a kitchen appliance, what would you be?” And Tom was asked: “If you were stood in front of a full-length mirror, what nickname would you give yourself?”
Sandra said: “I’d be a mixer, because I like to mix it up.”
Tom said: “The hidden sausage.”
Jonathan said: “I do not want to know why it’s hidden or where it’s hidden.”
Tom was referring to earlier in the show when Sandra told Jonathan that her mother used to smuggle German sausages into America – something she has tried to do, and failed.
She said: “They have these little German sausages that are fried and you have them for traditional Christmas dinners and we have them for our Christmas dinners. So to get them into the States, after my mother passed away, she passed away with the secret of her connection, because she would get them smuggled in and they always arrived. We keep asking, ‘Who was it?’ and no-one will give up the person.
“I hide them openly. I’ve said I smuggle it. So if you go through customs, they take the wieners. So I also have them shipped from various sources, and I’m hopeful one will arrive before Christmas day.”
Also during the show, Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock and Jonathan all recreated the scene from Tom’s movie Big, by playing on a giant piano in the studio.
Jonathan rolled back a section of the studio’s carpet to reveal the giant black and white keyboard. He and Tom got on to play the music from Tom’s film, Big, and later, Sandra joined them playing Chopsticks, despite wearing very high heels.
Plus, Tom revealed how he loves spending time with his grandchildren and would have liked to have been a park ranger, Sandra rapped on the show and talked about rapping with George Clooney on the set of their new film, Cilla Black revealed that she celebrated her 70th birthday with a night out at the Viper Room in Hollywood and said she no longer receives a Christmas card from Paul McCartney.
Talking about his grandchildren, Tom Hanks told Jonathan: “Oh, it’s hilarious, because you can just throw them around like bean bags. It’s great, they love it. It’s fantastic.
“They live on the other side of town and it takes forever to get over there sometimes but I swear we’re just going to rush by and steal them out of the house one day so we can keep them and spoil them to the point of no return.”
Jonathan asked Tom what he would have been if he wasn’t an actor. He said: “The best job I could have managed would have been to be a park ranger. One of those guys that explain the history of where you are. You give the tour of a historic place, because I just would have, I would never have made anything up but I would have made it so fascinating that people would come back again and again and again.
“I would have been sadly pandering to anyone that would pay a bit of attention to me.”
Sandra Bullock said she and George Clooney used to do accents together and rap the Sugar Hill Gang’s Rapper’s Delight whilst making their new film, Gravity.
She said: “We’ve known each other, embarrassingly, over 20 years. We were either making fun of our director…who’s a wonderful man from Mexico and we attempted the accent, but it turned out a little Cuban…so we either did that, or we would rap off to an old rap song that we both knew from high school.”
During the show, Jonathan played Sandra the music to Rapper’s Delight.
Sandra added: “I know a lot. The sad part is I learned the words because I liked this guy in high school and I was like, ‘Next time I go to that dance, I’m going to know every word. I’m going to make sure he sees me lip-syncing it, and I’m going to catch his eye.’”
Jonathan persuaded Sandra to perform the rap on the sofa. Afterwards she said: “George actually knows a few more of the lyrics. Some of the bridges I got lazy and I thought they weren’t necessary for my luring of the man, I got lazy. But he knows all the bridges.”
Cilla Black revealed that to celebrate her 70th birthday she went to Los Angeles to party with a friend.
She said: “I escaped. I couldn’t cope with being 70…I stayed with my girlfriend, Patty, in LA and then my friend came over from England…I went out…as I’m known for clubbing. And I went on The Strip, I did The Strip. We started off in The Rainbow Lounge. I got picked up by two American girls. And then I went on to the Viper Lounge.”
Jonathan: “That’s the club that Johnny Depp started a few years ago?”
Cilla: “Yes, he did. And I was head-banging there. I ended up in a gay bar at three o’clock in the morning.”
Jonathan asked Cilla if she is still in touch with Paul McCartney.
Cilla said: “I must confess, and you heard it on national television first, he never sent me a Christmas card, that was the first time ever, ladies and gentleman. This last Christmas.”
