This new programme follows the search for the country’s best undiscovered comedian as hopefuls battle it out for the title of Stand Up Hero.

A series of open mic heats are held across the country with the funniest contestants from the heats judged at regional finals, and eventually converging for the grand final in London.

The live audience vote for the funniest eight wannabe comedians to reach the regional finals in Reading, London, Leeds and Glasgow. The finalists are mentored by comedian Ed Byrne who also analyses many of the acts with established stand-ups, including Jason Manford, Adam Bloom, and Dara O’Briain.

One lucky winner receives £5,000 (the biggest comedy prize in Britain after the Edinburgh Festival) and a tour of Jongleurs clubs, plus expert coaching from Ed. They will also be profiled in FHM and get involved in editing the magazine’s jokes page.

Asked what makes a successful stand-up, Ed commented: “It’s really important to try your material out in front of a live audience before you try your luck on stage. There are a few other things you can do to make a good impression. Own the stage, look at the audience and try and engage with them.”

He added: “Competitions like Stand Up Hero are an excellent way to jump the queue when it comes to making a career as a comedian. You can still be quite good and kicking around the B circuit but a good shot at the right competition, in front of the right audience can make all the difference.”
