ITV has acquired a new US Western drama series for ITV4, Hell on Wheels.

The deal includes all three seasons of Hell on Wheels - a total of 30 x 1 hour episodes.

It was negotiated by ITV's Head of Acquired Series Sasha Breslau and Endemol Worldwide Distribution’s Sales Director – United Kingdom and Eire, Gisela Asimus-Minnbergh.

Hell on Wheels will be broadcast on ITV4 in Summer 2013.

Sasha Breslau said "We are delighted to have this intriguing, superbly produced drama on ITV4 - Hell On Wheels is a compelling, contemporary Western and we hope our viewers will enjoy the journey."

The setting is 1860s post-Civil War America, and the place is Hell on Wheels - a dangerous, raucous, lawless melting pot of towns and settlements that stretched out along the first transcontinental railroad.

A Confederate soldier, played by Anson Mount (Straw Dogs, Cook County), arrives in Hell on Wheels, taking work on the railroad’s construction, in an attempt to track down and extract revenge on the Union soldiers who have killed his wife.

Hell on Wheels also stars Common (New Year’s Eve, Date Night) as Elam Ferguson, an emancipated slave working to achieve true freedom in a world entrenched in prejudice; Colm Meaney (Soldiers of Fortune, Get Him to the Greek) as Thomas “Doc” Durant, a greedy entrepreneur taking full advantage of the changing times; and Dominique McElligott (The Philanthropist, Moon) as Lily Bell, a newly widowed woman trying to survive in a man’s world.

The series shows the railroad’s institutionalised greed and corruption, the immigrant experience, and the plight of the newly emancipated African-Americans during reconstruction.

Over time, Hell on Wheels chronicles a potent turning point in America’s history, and how uncivilized the business of civilization can be.

The series is produced by Entertainment One in association with Endemol USA and Nomadic for AMC.  Endemol Worldwide Distribution holds the European television distribution rights to the series and to date the series has sold to, France (AB Droits); Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg and Switzerland (TNT); Turkey (CNBC-e); Slovakia (Slovak TV); CEE, Belgium, Greece, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Turkey (Sundance Channel); Norway (TV Norge); Spain (Antena 3); Denmark and Sweden (TV3); Ireland (RTE) and the United Kingdom (TCM).
