ITV commissions Fierce with Steve Backshall

Published: Sun 21 Feb 2016

Fierce sees BAFTA Award winning TV naturalist Steve Backshall seeking out the world’s most fierce animals in this brand-new commission for ITV, his first for the broadcaster.

Produced by Shiver, this 6x60’ series takes Steve on six epic adventures to Guyana, Mexico, Namibia, Indonesia, Australia and South Africa, where along the way he encounters the world’s most venomous snake, the Inland Taipan, gets perilously close to the largest carnivorous reptile in South America, the giant Black Caiman, attempts to track down the endangered Giant River Otter and stakes out the feisty and fearless Honey Badger.

As well as going eye-to-eye with American Crocodiles, swimming amongst Bull Sharks and narrowly escaping the jaws of the extraordinary Komodo Dragon, Steve also meets the people living cheek by jowl with these dangerous predators and those who have miraculously survived being attacked by them.

The beauty of the locations Steve visits belies the ‘kill or be killed’ reality of the environment for its wild inhabitants, which have developed fascinating and fierce physical adaptations and behaviours to survive in them, as he discovers.

On Fierce, Steve said: “In the wildest corners of our planet, lethal predators stalk their prey. With scalpel shark teeth, venoms and poisons, camouflage and super-senses, these are the beasts of nightmare and legend. In this, my first series for ITV, I'm on an expedition to find these ‘Fierce’ predators, discover what makes them tick, and meet the people that share their world.”

Fierce was commissioned for ITV by Andrew O’Connell, Commissioning Editor, Factual, and Richard Klein, Director of Factual. Andrew said: “In this brand new series, Steve Backshall will share with our viewers his depth of knowledge of wildlife, his expertise and his sense of adventure. He is a natural at handling the most dangerous of animals and Fierce promises to see him meeting a range of new challenges that will give us fresh insight into some incredible creatures.”

The Series Producer at Shiver is Mark Jones, Series Director is Charlie Bingham and the Executive Producer is Sally Evans, who said: “We’re really excited to be working with Steve.  His knowledge and fascination of fierce animals along with the people who encounter them promises to make compelling television.”
