In this special hour-long programme, Tonight highlights the acute shortage of organ donors and follows the heart-rending plight of a five-year-old boy waiting for, and finally undergoing, a life-saving heart transplant.
Reporter Jonathan Maitland also visits 20-year-old William Pope who was first filmed by the programme last November.
At that time he was on the “urgent” list waiting for a heart transplant, and time was fast running out. William has since had his transplant and is starting off on the long road to recovery.
There are currently around 10,000 people in the UK waiting for an organ transplant - around 1,000 of them will die waiting.
This programme, which is part of ITV’s From The Heart campaign to raise awareness of organ donation, will examine public attitudes towards this important issue and ask why less than a third of the UK population have registered as organ donors.
