Drama
Weatherill (Amy Robbins) is concerned when she discovers Sister Brigid (Linda Armstrong) has been looking for prospective parents to adopt Moira’s (Lisa Hogg) baby and has already arranged for her to have the baby in a Catholic mother and baby nursing home. Is Moira aware of her sister’s plans?
Meanwhile, Matron (Wendy Craig) is proving to be a difficult patient and is refusing to follow doctor’s orders to rest, claiming she has work to do and a hospital to run. Meanwhile, Susie (Sarah Beck Mather) is back on the wards and trying her best to be a model nurse, she immediately puts an end to her relationship with Carnegie (Robert Cavanah) asserting that wont jeopardise her career for the sake of a fling. However, when Carnegie stuns her with a marriage proposal, she turns him down. Carnegie’s pride is wounded by the rejection, will this have repercussions for Susie?
Middleditch (Ian Carmichael) announces the details of his bequest to The Royal and Weatherill finally agrees that the money will be best spent in building a new general ward rather than on the baby unit. Only Carnegie is a dissenting voice, when he learns that he will not be involved in the administration of the funds!
Elsewhere, Bobby (Christopher Coghill) comes across a local thug, Sam (Matthew Hall) vandalising ambulances. He and Burnett (Damian O’Hare) escort him home but when they meet his aggressive stepfather, they’re concerned he’s being abused. Later, Sam admits he’s been threatening him and Bobby and Burnett are worried when they see the number of wounds on Sam’s back. Bobby is furious, he was also abused as a child and can see history repeating itself. Burnett warns him not to get involved, but when Sam takes drastic action, Bobby’s livid and takes matters into his own hands and confronts Sam’s violent stepfather.
Elsewhere, Moira has been dragged to church by Sister Brigid and is stunned when her waters break and she goes into labour in the middle of confession! Brigid is on hand to deliver the baby girl in the middle of the church, and they’re taken to hospital to recuperate before the baby is adopted by a childless Catholic couple. However, Moira has other ideas and runs away from the hospital with her daughter. Ormerod, Weatherill and Brigid find her at the train station readying to leave and try to talk her round, but when events take a shocking turn Ormerod and Weatherill are left with a heartbreaking decision to make.
