Sir Thomas Fairfax served with Henry VIII on his expedition to Flanders and was knighted by the king when the city of Tournai surrendered. He was married to Agnes Gasoigne, who was a granddaughter of the Earl of Northumberland, and lived in Gilling Castle, in Yorkshire. He had six sons and six daughters, including twins William and Nicholas.

  Elizabeth Martineau was the sister of the author, philosopher and feminist Harriet Martineau, who mixed in a circle, which included Florence Nightingale, Charlotte Bronte, George Eliot and Charles Darwin. She married the pioneering surgeon Thomas Greenhow, who was one of the first fellows of the Royal College of Surgeons, and had three children.

  Married to the wool merchant Francis Lupton, Fanny, as she became known, was a formidable wife and mother, entertaining at her sprawling Victorian mansion, Beechwood, with the help of her formidable cook Thirwall. She hated tobacco and always wore gloves when reading the newspaper so that the print did not soil her fingers. But she was also a pioneer for women's education in Yorkshire.

  Widowed at the age of 43, after his wife Harriet died of influenza, Francis was left to care for their five children. Devastated by her death, he threw himself into work and local politics, running the family firm with his brother Arthur and becoming a prominent figure in Leeds public life. But all three of his sons were killed during the First World War, leaving him a broken man. He left £70,538 in his will - the equivalent of £9.8 million today.

  Kate's great-grandmother Olive was an Edwardian society beauty and daughter of a wealthy Yorkshire wool merchant who bequeathed both her good looks and her fortune to her descendants. Related by marriage to the authors Beatrix Potter and Arthur Ransome, she was also a distant cousin of Doris McLaughlin, the grandmother of film director Guy Ritchie. She married solicitor Noel Middleton on the eve of the First World War and had four children but died at the age of 55 after developing peritonitis from a burst appendix.

  Like Prince William, Kate's grandfather Peter Middleton was a pilot in the RAF, getting his wings at RAF Cranwell during the Second World War. He became a civilian pilot after being demobbed and married banker's daughter Valerie Glassborow. His brother Anthony married her twin sister Mary.

  Sir Nicholas Fairfax, who was the twin brother of Kate's ancestor William Fairfax, inherited Gilling Castle on his father's death. He was married twice to Alice Harrington, daughter of Sir John Harrington, and Jane Palmes, daughter of Guy Palmes. He held the office of Sheriff of Yorkshire.

  John Belasyse, 1st Baron Belasyse, was an English nobleman, soldier and MP, who fought for the royalists during the English Civil War, later becoming Lieutenant General of the King's forces in the North of England and being mentioned in Samuel Pepys' diary. After the Restoration, he was impeached for conspiracy against Charles II but was never brought to trial. He returned to favour following the accession of James II and was appointed First Lord Commissioner of the Treasury.

  Mary Webb married James Waldegrave, son of the 1st Baron Waldegrave and Henrietta FitzJames, the illegitimate daughter of James II and Arabella Churchill, in 1714, and had three children. But she died in childbirth in 1719 and after her death her husband converted to Anglicanism in order to take his seat in the House of Lords. He went onto become an ambassador.

  Known as 'Jack' Spencer, Albert Edward John Spencer was the paternal grandfather of Diana Princess of Wales. His godfather was King Edward VII. Educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge, he served as a Captain in the First Life Guards during the First World War before becoming active in local politics in Northamptonshire. A well-known art connoisseur - he was a trustee of the Wallace Collection and fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and the Royal Society of Arts - he opened his ancestral home, Althorp, to the public.

  Prince William's grandfather Lord Spencer was educated at Eton, Sandhurst and the Royal Agricultural College, before fighting as a captain in the Royal Scots Greys during the Second World War. He was mentioned in Despatches. He served as an equerry to both King George VI and the Queen and was invested as a member of the Royal Victorian Order in 1954. He was married twice to the Hon Frances Roche, and Raine, Countess of Dartmouth, the only daughter of the novelist Barbara Cartland. He is best known for winning a bitter custody battle for his four children - including Princess Diana - from his first wife.
