• 1971: Sent to his grandparents’ house in Glasgow following his mother Valerie’s death
• 1978: Applies to join the Navy
• 1986: Persuades Ken to support Susan’s marriage to Mike Baldwin

• 2001: Devastated when Susan dies in a car crash
• Becomes the chief suspect in the investigation of the rape of Toyah Battersby. Begins dating Shelley Unwin and buys the bookmaker’s shop on Rosamund Street
• 2002: Meets florist Lucy Richards and embarks upon an affair
• 2003: Secretly weds pregnant Lucy. Becomes a father to son Simon. Marries Shelley bigamously. Moves to Portsmouth when his double life is uncovered
• 2007: Appears as a witness at stepsister Tracy Barlow’s murder trial
• 2008: Returns to Weatherfield with Simon following Lucy’s death. Becomes dependent on alcohol to ease the pressure of fatherhood. Re-opens the betting shop
• 2009: Cheats on Leanne Battersby, who leaves the area. Causes a fire at his flat while drunk and nearly kills Simon. Falls for Michelle Connor. Attends meetings to battle his alcoholism
• Sleeps with Michelle Connor
• Is delighted when Leanne returns and they get back together, promises his drinking is a thing of the past.
