With Maria back at Weatherfield General, it wasn't long before visitors began to arrive to see the new arrival. Audrey gushed that the little one had Liam's eyes while Fiz cooed: 'Ooh but he's definitely got your nose and your lips. Who do you think he looks like Tony?' Tony replied deadpan: 'That little bald old man on Benny Hill!' then smiled: 'I'm only joking. I think he is absolutely beautiful.'

Maria looked up at the balloon Kirk was holding and he wailed: 'It was the only one they had. Still a balloon is a balloon isn't it?' In a tone generally reserved for talking to a three year old or the village idiot, Tony replied: 'A balloon is indeed a balloon Kirk. It is not, for instance, a shoe, a battleship or a hazelnut.' 'Exactly!' beamed Kirk, clearly delighted that he found someone on the same wavelength as himself.

Kevin was noticeably quiet as they waited for a taxi to go meet Ben's mum and dad. Sally asked him what was wrong and he mumbled: 'I'm musing.' Sally cried: 'You're amusing?' He replied: 'No, I am musing!' Of course, she then demanded to know what he was musing about. He grunted that he didn't know and she sighed: 'You don't know what you are thinking about? Typical! Well I hope you are going to be more sociable when we meet Ben's mum and Dad.' Ben told them his mum was always asking his dad what he was thinking and Kev asked: 'And does it get on his nerves too?'

Desperate to let Molly know he couldn't come, he suddenly cried: 'Do you know, I think I've left my phone at home. I'll just pop back and get it in case there's a call out.' but Sally told him he was off duty and if there was Tyrone would get it. He told her: 'He's gone to the dogs.' She told him that was a bit harsh but he clarified: 'No, he's really gone to the dogs, with Jack and Connie. I'll be two minutes.' She sighed, told him to hurry up and to bring her fuchsia lipstick from her mauve make up bag while he was at it.

Seeing Jason peering out of the window, Tina sighed: 'What are you doing? You think he's out there don't you? He doesn't know a thing.' Jason told her he was expecting David to pop up any minute with a catapult: 'We should put him out of his misery. I can't live like this.' She told him she was going to tell him tomorrow. He told her he had better come with her in case he kicked off but she replied that she'd prefer to do it on her own. He smiled: 'Well don't you let him talk you back into anything alright? No cuddling him if he cries. Just pop his dummy back into his mouth and get out of there.'

As she downed a glass of wine, Molly was beginning to resigned to Kevin not turning up when there was at last a knock at the door. A self satisfied smile spread across her face and she went to answer it.

She got a shock as she opened it and found Tyrone stood there. He sighed: 'Sorry, did I get you out of bed? I forgot me keys.' As he stepped inside he finally realised that she didn't usually go to bed in full make up and earrings and asked: 'What's with the...?' She hastily lied: 'Oh I felt better, hence the getting dressed.' With not a suspicious bone in his body, he smiled and went into the room. Seeing the candles and two wineglasses on the table he cried: 'Wow! What's going on here then?'

Lying through her teeth, she told him: 'I perked up so I thought I'd make an effort for you. I was waiting for you.' He smiled: 'Aw, well it didn't seem fair me being out enjoying myself while you were at home not feeling well. Hey, I won fourteen quid on a tip of Jack's. Slimboy Slim. You should have seen him go! If you're up for it tonight I could nip to Dev's and get us a second bottle.' She didn't look keen but managed to smile: 'Well, I'm feeling better so why not?'

He smiled: 'You never know, we could hit the hay early and have a bit of the, what is it Kev calls it?' She looked mortified and mumbled: 'I wouldn't know.' and he laughed: 'No pyjama night!' She laughed weakly and told him: 'Well we might just do that.' He suddenly became serious and asked: 'Can I tell you something, honestly? I know I've been a bit tight on Connie but if I die before you do, don't go off with anyone else will you? I mean I want you to be happy, just not that happy.' She looked stunned but gasped: 'I promise.' and he beamed: 'Great. I'll go get the vino!' but as he trotted happily out of the front door Molly looked like she suddenly had the weight of the world on her shoulders.

With Tony sent off to get a vase for Natasha's flowers, Maria told them that the birth was very scary: 'But somehow, deep down, I felt safe and comforted, knowing he was with me.' Audrey smiled: 'Aw, Liam will always be with you sweetheart.' But Maria replied: 'Oh, no. I mean I know he will but I meant Tony. That he was with me, compared to being on my own.' Fiz and Natasha didn't look too impressed but Audrey replied diplomatically: 'Yes, of course and we should thank our lucky stars he was.'

The door opened and in walked Tony clutching not a vase but a floral display that made Natasha's floral offering look like Amy Barlow stood next to Fred Elliott. Kirk cried: 'I might have known you'd win.' and Tony simpered innocently: 'What? This was all they had!'

Another knock at the door and Molly went to answer it crying: 'Have you forgot your key again?' She was stunned to open it and find Kevin stood there. Her heart raced as he pushed past her into the hallway and told her had had to go for a meal with Ben's mum and dad. She gasped: 'What are you doing? Ty's back! He's at Dev's. He'll be back in two minutes!'

She peeked round the doorway to see Tyrone stepping out of the shop. Luckily for her, he was delayed as Dev's radio controlled car ran into his feet. To her relief, Ty picked it up and began to walk back to chat to Dev. Closing the door, she grabbed Kevin and hastily dragged him through the house.

She cried: 'This is insane!' Kevin cried that he had been saying that from the start. She snapped that he had not as she started to unlock the back door. She looked at his hands and cried: 'What's that?' He replied: 'Sally's lipstick. Is this mauve?' She told him no and he asked: 'I mean is it fuchsia?' but any discussion on lipstick shades was forgotten as she suddenly cried: 'The lock's stuck!'

He grabbed her and told her to get out of the way and let him have another go. She cried that it had been doing it the other day and that Tyrone has been going to put some oil on it. She almost jumped out of her skin as she heard Tyrone's key turn in the front door and shrieked: 'Kevin! Hurry up!' At last, the lock turned and and as he opened the door, she practically hurled him through it as Tyrone intoned from the hallway: 'Dev recommended a bottle. Six pounds seventy nine, I said why not? She's worth it. Californian!'

He walked in enthusing: 'Have you seen Dev's remote controlled car? It's awesome!' Seeing the back door open, he asked what she was doing and she blustered: 'I was just getting some air. I thought my headache was coming back but it was a false alarm. Come on, let's have a drink. I think I need it!'

Tina asked Jason how come, as he was a builder, he'd never bought somewhere cheap and done it up. He shrugged that you needed money to do that and she asked: 'Well how would you feel about you and me getting a mortgage, getting somewhere cheap and doing it up?' He frowned: 'Me and you?' She told him she meant as a business venture: 'I'd help where I could and then when we sold it we could buy another one and...' He was very cagey but seemed to relax and even looked thoughtful when she assured him: 'I'm talking about as an investment, not a love nest!'

Emily and Ramsey walked into the pub chatting amiably about cricket. She smiled as he told her: 'I always have a bit of a problem when it comes to The Ashes. When people say we, I have to stop and think.' She smiled and told him: 'You would have liked Jed Stone. He was one for the cricket. Another of Norris's favourite people.' They turned to find Norris sat there and she whispered: 'Ah, talk of the devil!'

Anna looked up from her magazine to find Eddie dressed smartly, still looking like a down and out by anyone else's standards but smart for him, and looking like he'd even had a wash. She sighed wearily: 'Oh no!' He told her she didn't even know what he was going to say but she replied knowingly: 'I think I have a very good idea.' Next thing, he dropped down into one knee.

He asked: 'Will you marry me?' but she wailed: 'No. No I will not marry you. I was just getting relaxed and you're getting me all wound up now.' He told her to give him one good reason why she shouldn't marry him but she cried: 'Why do you always do this? You do it out of pity. You did it last time Gary went away, you did it when me mam died.' He told her just wanted to make her happy and she told him he already did. He pouted: 'Do you still like me then?' and she smiled: 'I love you but the last thing I need right now is you coming downstairs dressed like one of The Wiggles and proposing to me.' He smiled: 'Fair enough but I might get lured away. That blonde from the hairdressers said hello to me the other day. I'm sure there was a twinkle in her eye.'

Molly endured a seemingly endless rambling discourse from Tyrone ranging from how they got the stripes in straight lines in Neapolitan ice cream to whether they really ever put a man on the moon. He chuntered: 'Cos if we'd even been able to put that much lead through the Van Helen belt a man could never have taken a photo because...' She finished in unison with him: '.. the film would have frozen at that temperature.' clearly having heard it many times before. He then wittered: 'I like butterscotch, raspberry ripple and lemon sorbet. Mind you, lemon sorbet isn't an ice cream, it's a sorbet. What is a sorbet?' and she sighed wearily: 'I don't know.'

Maria mused over names for the baby. Audrey suggested Jack but she told her they'd think it was after Jack Duckworth. Kirk enthused: 'What about just a letter like H out of steps? You have the whole alphabet to choose from. There's an M and Q in James Bond!' Audrey suggested Alfie then Kirk cried: 'Dartanion!' Tony told them diplomatically that perhaps they should leave it to Maria and joked: 'In fact, why don't we call it a night?' Kirk told him he would get Ozzy from the woman and asked: 'Have you got her number T? I mean Tony.'

Ramsey chortled about the reaction at the church social: "You could almost hear everyone thinking who's that handsome stranger escorting Emily Bishop? They are clearly very fond and protective of her. I even caught the vicar sizing me up." Emily blushed: "Well that might have been for different reasons." Ramsey chuckled: "Well everyone's eyes were green, their hackles raised, their danders up." Norris sniped: "You are hardly the Milk Tray man. You're a pensioner en route to Australia. Didn't you put them in the picture?" and seethed as his brother chuckled: "No, let them speculate. We quite enjoyed the notoriety didn't we Emily?"

Jesse mused: 'What are hackles anyway?' Eileen told him they were the hairs on the back of a dog's neck and he frowned: 'How do you know that?' She retorted: 'How does anyone know anything?' He countered: 'Okay, then what's a dander?' She confessed that she had no idea and Sean cried: 'I like to think of it as a huge feather that stands up when you get cross!' (For those of you who might be wondering, the saying derives from 'dander', meaning 'ferment', i.e. the froth created in the of fermentation of yeast in brewing or baking. The word borrowed to form the expression 'get one's dander up' in order to convey the imagery of a frothing or agitated uproar.) In fact a few feet away, Norris's dander was certainly beginning to froth.

Natasha fumed about Tony telling them it was time to leave but Audrey told her firmly: 'Come on now, he hurt your feelings, get over it. Besides, if it hadn't been for him we don't know what might have happened to Maria.' Kirk nodded and opined: 'Do you know what Tony's got? People say the same thing about me. He's got charm.' There was no answer to this and the party headed down the corridor in amused silence.

Arriving home, Sophie and Sally left the taxi leaving Kevin to pay Eddie. With Madness's It Must Be Love playing on the radio, Eddie mused: 'Madness. Do you know, I've always envisaged dancing to this on my wedding day.' Kevin frowned and Eddie sighed: 'Where would we be without them eh?' Kevin hadn't got a clue what he was on about and asked: 'Who?' Eddie replied: 'Our other halves.' but Kevin just gave him a withering look and got out of the cab.

As he walked round onto the pavement he gave a long, longing look at the door of Molly's house. Alas, no-one appeared so, with a heavy sigh and an equally heavy heart, he turned and headed towards home.

He stirred in his slumbers and mumbled: "Pass us that fan belt Kev and I'll do the Mondeo. You put the kettle on." She turned back and looked at the candles, their shimmering light now making her feel anything but romantic at the end of an evening that had promised so much but delivered so little.

Norris was not amused as Sean told him: 'I'm sure you're sick to death of hearing this but you brother, isn't he lovely?' Norris replied icily: 'I disagree almost violently.' but Sean continued: 'I'm sure you're sick of hearing this too but it's very hard to imagine you and him coming from the same... place, as it were.' Norris simply gave him a stony stare and Sean held his hand out for payment.

Emily told Ramsey she wished he didn't have to go and he smiled: 'Mrs Wolfe's eleven o'clock curfew beckons. She could make Nurse Ratchet seem like you!' She sighed: 'What I meant was, it's shame you have to leave for Australia. You really fit in round here?' He told her that was very kind of her to say: 'You are very kind. Both you and Rita, you are both very kind.' She asked hopefully: 'Well maybe you could reconsider, postpone your plans?' Norris appeared and, having overheard, blustered: 'That's impossible. You know his itinery. He's staying with friends in Adelaide until he moves into his, what do they call it, his retirement village.'

Norris smirked: 'See Emily, he'll be in a community. I bet there's swimming pools, table tennis and all sorts.' Ramsey muttered: 'And on that note.' and got up to go. Emily told him his help today had been very much appreciated and he assured her it was his pleasure. As Norris sat down, Emily scowled at him: 'People do have feelings you know. Even the gregarious!' but Norris opined blithely: 'Well we won't be long. I'm quite keen to get back to the book I'm reading. It's a novelisation of The Memphis Belle.' and seemed quite oblivious to the murderous look Emily was giving him.

Left alone, Tony told Maria she could call the baby Sandy after the beach. She smiled and told him that wasn't the worst suggestion she'd heard that day. He told her she looked tired and that he should go. She thanked him for everything he'd done. He told her she was very welcome but she replied: "I really mean it. Thank you." He asked if he could come and see her tomorrow and she assured him: "You can come and see us anytime." He looked down at the sleeping baby in his arms and asked: "Are you going to be a good boy for your mummy?"

She told him she had decided on a name and he told the wee one: 'Ah, we have a name at last!' She told him quietly: 'I'm going to call him Liam. How could I not?' Tony looked down at the sleeping mite and told him quietly: 'I think that would make your daddy very proud.'

He leant down and kissed him tenderly on the forehead and whispered: 'Very proud indeed.' As he lifted his head back up, his eyes were filled with tears and one could only imagine the range of feelings and emotions that were flooding through him as he held the child that he had helped bring into the world whilst knowing that he had also deprived him of his father.
