Tony told Roy again: 'Go on. Make the call.' but Roy put the phone down and picked up Maria's wedding photo. He opined: 'How the guilt must eat away at you every day. Being here with Maria, Liam's son a constant reminder of your actions.' Tony replied calmly that he had nothing to feel guilty about: 'I love Maria and that wee baby.' Roy told him he didn't doubt that for a second: 'Which must make it all the more excruciating, knowing what you have taken from them.'

Tony snapped angrily: 'Just shut your mouth! You don't know what you are talking about.' Roy replied: Do you know Poe's Telltale Heart? A man murders another man and hides his body beneath the floorboards. When the police come, the man believes he can hear the victims heart beating under the floorboards. It gets louder and louder and louder, so unbearable is his guilt.' Tony suddenly cried: 'Make the phone call, if that's what you want!'

He stopped abruptly, the stress showing on his face and he sank onto the arm of the chair and gasped: 'Do you want me to have another heart attack?' Roy looked anxiously at Tony and replied hesitantly: 'Of course not.' and, not wanting to worsen Tony's state, made a hasty exit.

Joe led Gail outside and she couldn't believe her eyes as she saw he had decorated the boat and prepared a picnic for them to have onboard. She squealed with excitement and he cried: 'Have you seen what I've called her?'

She looked round to see the name of the boat and smiled broadly: 'That's wonderful! I never had you down as a romantic.' He threw his arms around her as she hugged him and laughed: 'Oh I'm full of surprises, me.'

The competitive granddad competition seemed to have begun already as Ken took Simon into The Kabin to but him a present. Simon eyes Horace behind the counter and frowned: 'You look different.' Horace asked: 'In what way?' and Simon cried: 'To normal;.' Ken laughed and, as Norris emerged from the back, Simon cried in astonishment: 'There's two of them! This happened on a Doctor Who!'

Horace huffed indignantly: 'How ridiculous. We look nothing like each other and you are a very rude little boy.' Ken demanded an apology and Norris told Horace: 'You can't speak to customers like that!' Horace huffed: 'Oh but he can tall to me like that? Saying I look like you?' Norris cried indignantly: 'And what's so offensive about that?'

Ken told him again that he wanted an apology and Norris blustered hastily: 'You are quiet right Ken. Please, have this yo-yo on me.' Simon took the freebie from him and they departed, Ken warning: 'You know, there are plenty of other newsagents Norris.'

As the door closed behind them, Horace cried: 'Charming. You know, it's yobs like him that are destroying the very fabric of this country.' Norris, seemingly oblivious to the fact that he was talking to a carbon copy of himself, replied pointedly: 'Horace, I think you and I need to have a little chat.' Oh dear. It looked like Horace's stay at The Kabin was going to be considerably less than Sheila and Joan's.

Back home, Ken watched as Simon tested out his yo-yo. Blanche told him: 'You know Simon, I was North West Yo-yo Champion three years in a row when I was a girl.' Deirdre commented that it was the first she had heard of it but Blanche continued: 'I had all the moves. Round the world, walking the dog, the sleeper, over the shoulder, the loop the loop, reverse loop the loop...' Ken was very impressed and told her he had no idea she was such an expert.

Deirdre sighed: 'Wake up Ken. She's reading them off the back of the box.' Blanche protested: 'I am not.' but when Deirdre challenged her to show them all her spaghetti reverse loop the loop she mumbled: 'I would but with my arthritis I'd have it pinging all over the place. I'd feat for me nick-nack nook!'

They were interrupted as Peter arrived with George and began to introduce his family. George stopped him and smiled: 'No, let me guess. You must be Ken.' He offered his hand and Ken shook it, albeit a little reservedly.

He then looked over at Blanche and beamed: 'And you must be Deirdre.' Blanche was thrilled at this and, saying nothing to correct him, took his hand and told him: 'Delighted to meet you!' then looked at Deirdre and told her: 'You can go now and finish up tomorrow.'

As Deirdre looked at her in puzzlement, Blanched told George, 'This is our housekeeper Edna. You'll have to excuse her, she's a bit slow.' Deirdre sighed and told George: 'I'm Deirdre, this is my mother Blanche. Please ignore anything she says.' George was mortified and blushed: 'Oh I am so sorry. How embarrassing.' Ken conceded that there was a bit of an age gap, to which Blanche snorted: 'Generation gap more like.' George then asked Simon how he was and he replied: 'Fair to middling thank you.', making them all laugh.

Simon then asked cheekily: 'Have you brought me a present then.?' Peter chided him but George smiled: 'Well yes I have, only I wasn't sure whether you'd like it or not.' He took it out of the bag and Simon gasped as he saw a handheld video game. He rushed to the sofa to show Peter who enthused: 'Wow, they cost a small fortune do them! What do you say to your Granddad?' As Simon beamed: 'Thank you Granddad!', Ken looked at the yo-yo in his hand and, with a face like a wet weekend, put it on the table.

Kirk arrived at Maria's with an armful of fireworks in the hope of letting them off in her backyard but it was not so gently pointed out to him that a house with a heart attack patient, a dog and a sleeping baby might not be the best place. Maria sent him off to find Tyrone in the hope that it would keep him out of her, and more particularly Tony's, way.

As she began to open a bottle of champagne, Gail asked Joe what they should drink to. He was just about to reply when Frieda, passing by on her way from the shops, cried out as the handle on one of her carrier bags broke and it fell to the floor. Leaping ashore to help her, Joe told Gail with a smile: 'I'll be just one minute. Don't go anywhere!'

Roy told Hayley that Tony's guilt was evident from the way he reacted but she flew at him, telling him vociferously: 'Who are you to know how anyone would react if they were accused of murder, let alone if they'd just had a heart attack? No, you are doing what you always do. Brooding, thinking too much and filling in gaps that aren't there! I know you Roy Cropper and if you were as sure as you say you are you'd have phoned the police when he told you to, but you didn't, did you? Roy, there are three people's lives you could ruin here. More even. Tell me you'll drop this now!' He looked pained to do so but sighed: 'Yes. Yes, on reflection you are probably right. Even ninety percent certain is not enough in a case like this.'

Ty told Kirk that he couldn't let them off in his yard: 'It's too small mate, and you'd scare Schmeichel and Ozzy.' Jack suggested he go to the organised one on the Red Rec but Kirk sighed: 'But I like doing them myself. I know all the rules. Light the blue touch paper and all that.' Jack and Ty looked almost relieved when he went to get another round in and Ty seized the opportunity to ask Jack what was up with him and Connie.

Jack replied hesitantly: 'It's a bit... Sometimes when I'm in bed at night I can hear her on the landing.' Ty laughed: 'What do you mean hear her? Yodeling or summat?' Jack confided: 'No, her footsteps, lurking about!' and looked mortally embarrassed as Ty hooted: 'And what? You reckon she's after he a bit more than companionship?' Jack blustered that it was probably nothing but Ty snickered: 'I always said she was after you. The dirty mare!'

George told Ken and co how he had lost touch with Lucy after he and his wife parted and sighed: 'I wasn't much of a father to her I'm afraid.' Blanche snorted: 'You and Ken will have a lot in common then.' He told them he hoped he could make it up by being part of Simon's life and asked Peter if he could perhaps take him to the zoo one day. Peter told him that perhaps they could all go. Simon asked excitedly if they had monkeys and George laughed: 'Yes, and they're all nearly as cheeky as you!'

As Gail returned from the loo, she apologised to Joe, telling him it was a bit chilly. He produced an expensive champagne bottle and smiled: 'How about the real thing?' She gasped that they couldn't afford it but he beamed: 'You only live once. Climb aboard and we'll crack it open.' but looked a bit deflated as she told him: 'In a minute. I'll just go put some soup on to warm us up.'

Roy was still subdued and Hayley told him: 'I know how you worry, we all do, but perhaps finding Tony dying like that was more traumatic for you than you thought?' He replied: 'Perhaps, but you are right. There are too many ifs and maybes for me to go to the police.' Hayley seemed relieved and told him: 'Come on, we're not going to sit in here like this all night. Come on, you can take me for an orange juice and maybe see some fireworks on the way?'

As they left the pub, Ty asked Kirk if he fancied going down to The Red Rec after all but Kirk told him: 'I'm not giving up that easily. How easy would it be to get on to Underworld's roof?' The pair looked down the street and both broke into mischievous smiles.

It was time to go and George thanked everyone for being so welcoming and told them how glad he was that Simon had such a warm and close family. He kissed Deirdre goodbye and then kissed Blanche's hand, telling her with a smile: 'I know who's the boss round here.' She beamed: 'And don't you forget it.' as she shook hands with a somewhat reserved Ken.

Ken's seeming unease about George's arrival on the scene weren't made any better by Blanche who, as the door closed behind him, cried: 'Good looking? Good company? Loaded? I think I'm in love!'

Meanwhile, a few miles away in a certain large detached house, Jack laid happily leafing through a book when his ears suddenly pricked up at the creaking of floorboards outside his room.

Sure enough, the shadow of two legs could be clearly seen silhouetted against the carpet. Jack hastily switched off his bedside light and affected theatrical snores that could be heard three miles away and looked a very relieved man as the legs moved away in the direction from whence they came. It looks like he had escaped... for tonight at least.

Gail finally returned from yet another interruption and told Joe: 'Sorry, it was Sarah on the phone. Trouble with Bethany at school.' Joe cried: 'I've been trying to say this all night but what with the soup, the phone, the neighbours. Oh to hell with it, I might as well just come out and say it. To use a nautical term, I'd have gone under a long time ago without you so, Gail, will you do me the honour of...' He didn't get the chance to finish as Gail cried: 'Oh Joe, I thought you'd never ask. Of course I'll marry you!'

As Joe smiled with joy, Ty and Kirk came running out from behind the garage looking up expectantly at the roof of Underworld.

As the factory exploded in a riot of bangs and flashes, Gail and Joe kissed aboard Gail Force, all ready to set sail into married life.

Emerging from the pub, Frieda and Norris watched the explosions overhead with gasps and open mouths,

As they rounded the corner into Coronation Street, Roy and Hayley too watched the spectacle with admiration.

Down the street, Tony opened the front door to see what all the noise was and, as he looked back down the street he saw Roy and Hayley standing there. the two men's eyes met.

No words were spoken. None were needed. It was clear to see that despite Tony's fervent wishes, and Roy's assurances to Hayley, there was unfinished business between them.
