With everyone still waiting for Tony to come back in, the congregation was beginning to get restless. Audrey wondered aloud where he could have got to and Kirk replied: 'These things never go to plan. When I was christened I was wriggling about so much the vicar dropped me on me head. Can you believe that?' The vicar came over and asked if they were ready and Maria told him: 'I'm so sorry. We're still waiting for the Godfather.' He assured her it was no problem and that he would be in the vestry when she was ready to start.

Maria huffed: 'I could kill that Rosie Webster. Why did this have to happen today?' Fiz smiled: 'It was bound to happen sooner or later. A fool and their money?' At last, Tony came back in and, as he sat down, the strain on his face was clear to see. Maria asked if he was alright and he sighed: 'You don't want to know.' She told him just to forget about it for now: 'It's only work.' He told her that sometimes things just couldn't wait and, as he took Liam from her, sighed: 'I'm so sorry wee man.'

Finding Joe singing 'When The Boat Comes In', Gail laughed: 'First it was Sailing, then the theme from Hawaii Five O, then this, what's next?' He smiled: 'I was thinking Rio. Remember the video? Simon Le Bon posing on a yacht?' She mused that a pop star on a yacht in the Caribbean is a bit different to on old wreck in a back street of Weatherfield. He grinned: 'We are talking about the boat I hope.' She told him it just seemed like a big job but he enthused: 'It's a challenge, yes, but I'm up for it. Where you see decay I see potential.' She smiled: ''We are talking about the boat I hope.' and he beamed: 'Oh yes. We'll have such good times on this Gail. Our boat has quite literally come in!'

As Maria returned with the vicar, Tony asked if he was alright. She whispered: 'He was fine. Forgiveness is his business. Helen on the other hand?' He muttered that he wouldn't lost any sleep over her. The vicar opened his mouth to begin the service only for Tony's phone to suddenly hum loudly as it vibrated in his pocket. As he took it out, Maria hissed at him to leave it but he replied: 'I'm sorry. I have to deal with this. I'm sorry Vicar, could you just bear with me? It's something of a crisis. I will be as quick as I can.'

As they chatted about Molly's home gym, Jack told them how he'd bough a Bullworlker when they were all the rage but put in the cupboard after only a few goes with it: 'I forgot all about it till I noticed our Vera wasn't asking me to get the tops off jars of piccalilli and pickles any more. In fact, she was opening them for me!' Connie gasped: 'She was using it?' and he cried: 'Three times a day! Which was alright if you just wanted to top taking off a jar but when it came to her wanting a bit of how's your father?' They burst out laughing as he sighed: 'It was like fighting Jeff Capes in a shortie nightie!'

They were interrupted as Sally walked in and sniped at Kevin: 'Oh here you are while our daughter is at home breaking her heart.' Kevin replied: 'There's nothing we can do. It's up to the police now, and anyway, I told you it was Molly's birthday.' She sniffed sarkily: 'Oh like we could forget. You've gone an about it enough. Never mind your daughter's had her prospects ruined.'

Outside, Tony quickly appraised Jimmy Docherty of Carla's threats. Jimmy told him to give her what she wanted but Tony replied: 'That won't help long term. If she couldn't live with herself in LA what chance has she here, seeing his child every day? We're on borrowed time as it is.' Jimmy asked: 'So where are we going with this?' and Tony replied: 'I don't know. I just thought you should know, unless you want to spend the next twenty years in prison. She has to be dealt with.' Jimmy gasped: 'Dealt with? You want her dead.' Tony told him he didn't say that but Jimmy snapped: 'You didn't have to. Unless you've got another solution?' Tony remained silent and Jimmy sighed: 'I didn't think so.'

Jimmy patted him on the arm and told him: 'Good luck then. She's your missus. You sort it.' and began to walk away. Tony cried: 'Me? I couldn't kill the man I hated most in the world. Do you think I could kill the woman I loved? That I probably still do deep down somewhere?' Jimmy snapped: 'Do I look like I care? I've done all the killing I am doing for you.' Tony told him again that he couldn't harm a hair on Carla's head and that he would sooner kill himself.

Jimmy turned and walked back towards him and replied coldly: 'I'm not stopping you. In fact right now I'd gladly help you on your way.' Tony retorted that he wasn't the one that was going to send him to prison: 'Walk away now and I'm out of options. I'm not going to wait for Carla to drop the axe whenever the mood takes her. I'll go the police and shop you in, maybe cop for a lighter sentence.'

Jimmy's response to this was brief and to the point as he drove his fist hard into Tony's solar plexus. As he writhed in agony on the ground, Jimmy growled menacingly: 'You're going nowhere!'

Inside the church, Michelle sighed: 'Do you think that organist does requests? This is the third time I've heard this.' Barry tittered to himself as Ryan muttered: 'And it wasn't much cop the first time round!' but his smile quickly vanished as Helen announced: 'Well I have had enough of this. I am not going to let that man make a mockery of my grandson's christening!' Ignoring his pleas for her to sit down, she marched over to Maria.

She demanded to know if they were doing this today or not. Maria sighed that they were waiting for Tony: 'He's already explained Helen, he's got problems at work.' Helen snorted: 'That are more important than this little one's christening, the most important day of his life. And this is the man who's going to play father to him!' Maria told her that Tony loved Liam to bits and would be back as soon as he could but Helen snorted unkindly: 'I just hope his real daddy understands.'

Joe told Tina he wasn't sure what to use on the hull and she suggested: 'Dynamite?' He asked if she didn't have a job to go to and she replied: 'Norris has sent me packing while he interviews for a new assistant. I think he's scared she might ask me what he's like to work for. he's not happy about this you know.' He smiled back: 'I beg to differ. Norris is only ever truly happy when he's got something to moan about.' She sat down and asked him: 'And what about you? What do you get out of this?'

He sat down beside her and told her: 'You aside, I've spent most of my life turning good things bad. Career, marriage, sanity? I've wrecked them all in my time. Not deliberately but that's the way things have crumbled, literally.' She asked what that had to do with the boat and he told her: 'I've finally got a chance to do the opposite, Make good something that's ruined.' and grinned: 'And the boat might turn out alright as well!'

Kevin gulped as Sally suddenly asked Molly: 'Where'd you get that? That necklace!' Connie smiled: 'Aye, I'd noticed it too. It's lovely.' As Molly struggled for an answer, Sally told Connie: 'I saw exactly the same one in Lanzarote. I begged tightwad here to buy it for me.' Kevin mumbled that it was expensive and she cried: 'I know. I can't afford that on a mechanic's wage you said. Obviously it depends on the mechanic.'

Ty held his hands up and cried: 'Don't look at me. I never bought it. I've not seen it before today.' Molly blustered that it was a birthday present to herself and cried: 'That's alright isn't it?' Ty spluttered that it depended on how much it cost and Sally cried: 'Near a hundred Euros.' As Ty gasped, Molly told him: 'That's Euros, not pounds.' but Sally pointed out that there wasn't much difference these days. Ty cried that he felt guilty enough just buying a pie at the match and Jack laughed: 'Aye, but the necklace looks better on Molly than the pie does on you!'

Kevin looked relieved as Ty shrugged: 'No, I didn't mean anything. It's nice.' but Molly looked more than a little put out as Sally opined: 'Well I'm glad I didn't get one now. They told me they were unique, made by local craftsman. Obviously mass produced.'

Jimmy snarled: 'What do you think I am? You think you can just whistle me up, point someone out and I'll kill 'em?' Tony replied that he could only go on past experience. Jimmy hissed: 'That was nothing like this! I hit a bloke I'd never met with a car. Five seconds, it was over! I couldn't take any chances this time. I'd have to be certain, be up close, watch her die!' Tony replied coldly that murder was murder but Jimmy spat: 'No it is not. I never knew him. I never saw the whites of his eyes. He was roadkill!' Tony told him bluntly: 'He was a man called Liam Connor, with a wife and his child in her belly. If you're not up for it maybe we should go to the police together.'

Jimmy slammed Tony against a tree and cried: 'Look at you. How can I let someone like you drop me in it?' Tony opened his mouth to speak but Jimmy spat: 'Shut up! He looked into Tony's eyes and warned him: 'One day I am going to make you pay.'

As he released his grip on him, Tony asked what he was going to do. His face filled with resigned self loathing, Jimmy asked quietly: 'Where is she?'

Maria was relieved when Tony reappeared in the church and asked what on earth he had been doing. He replied quietly: 'I'm sorry. Everything's under control. I'm here for the duration now. I won't be going anywhere.'

In The Kabin, Norris gushed: 'I have to say this curriculum vitae is most impressive. I always judge the quality of a candidate by the quality of the paper. See through the paper, see through the applicant!' He received no reply and his prospective employee merely continued to look at him impassively as he mumbled: 'And you are quite opaque. Anyone can see that.'

He caressed her cv and mused: 'Let me see, this would be a heavyweight bonded GSM with a woven finish if I'm not mistaken.' She opened her mouth and replied with a brief: 'Yes.' and he smiled: 'You see, I was in paper for many many years. Not literally of course. I'm not a boiled sweet.' He face remained stone like and he quickly coughed: 'Well, there's nothing more to discuss. Unless there's anything you wish to raise?' She replied, in probably the longest sentence of her life: 'I prefer my cv to do the talking.' and he beamed: 'Which it does most eloquently!'

He told her: 'Your predecessor could learn a lot from you.' Her eyebrow raised about a millimetre and she enquired: 'So I have been successful.' He told her cheerily that she could start as soon as she wished and with a curt: 'Thank you.' she got up to go and Norris gushed: 'I think you'll be happy here. It's a quiet little street.' Unfortunately, his words were drowned out by the sound of an orbital sander being applied to a boat hull.

So intent was Norris on confronting Joe about the noise that, in his haste, he entirely failed to spot Carla walking hesitantly up the steps to the factory. She paused for a moment as she looked at the Underworld sign then put her keys into the lock and stepped inside.

He complained bitterly, telling Joe that the entire shop was shaking: 'My sour apples are jiggling in their jar!' Gail came out and he fumed: 'Could you tell your partner that this is a residential street?' Joe pointed out that he had a garage right next door but Norris replied that Kevin's was a legitimate business premises and this was a private house. Gail told him bluntly: 'Yes, when the van that delivers your papers stops revving his engine at four in the morning and the bloke stops slamming the door than maybe, just maybe, you might have a leg to stand on. So sorry, the sooner you let Joe crack on the sooner it will be gone.'

Indeed, amongst all the maritime mithering, no-one noticed a hooded figure slow to a halt in the street behind them. Jimmy looked over at the factory and, seeing a car parked outside it and knowing that Carla must be in there waiting to meet Tony, pulled away quietly and turned the corner into Viaduct Street.

The congregation listened as Ryan read the Baptism Of The Holy Spirit. He intoned: ' The Lord God says I shall sprinkle clean water over you and you shall be cleaned from all that defiles you. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to conform to my laws and live by them.'

As he held the baby, Tony seemed to barely hear anything Ryan. He glanced anxiously at his watch and saw that it was fast approaching four o'clock. He knew Carla would be arriving at the factory and what fate awaited her.

Meanwhile, back in Coronation Street, Carla looked around as she entered the factory, unlit and eerily silent, then headed into the office.

Popping over to give Molly a hand with the drinks, Kevin whispered that he thought they'd had it over the necklace: 'I shouldn't have taken the risk.' She whispered back: 'This is killing me. I wish we could just get away!' He told her they just had to be patient: 'We'll make up for it at the motel.' but she replied: 'I don't see how. Tyrone has just bought me a ball and chain.. And as for another Chester!' Kevin told her they would find away but she asked pointedly: 'How?'

At the church, the vicar told the assembled congregation: 'Today, this child begins his life in faith and you speak for him today. Will you help him and ensure he takes his place in worship in Christ's church?' They answered in unison: 'With God's help we will.' He then asked Tony, as God father, would you light the baptismal candle please?'

As Carla sat sipping tea in the office at Underworld, the vicar told them, 'In baptism, God invites us out of the darkness and into his wonderful light. To follow Christ means dying in sin and rising again to new light. So I ask you, do you reject the devil and all rebellion against God?' As the church bell struck four, Maria and the others murmured together: 'I reject them.'

Outside the factory, a gloved hand reached out and turned the handle on the back door.

And in the church, as the bell tolled for the final time, Tony looked into the burning flame and echoed: 'I reject them.' The vicar asked: 'And do you renounce the deceit and corruption of evil?' and Tony, knowing the murder of his wife was mere moments away, answered: 'I renounce them.'
