Roy listened as Maria told him: 'When I called the hospital and they said it could be just hours. I never want to go through another night like that. That flight took forever. I've never prayed so much.' Roy made sympathetic noises and she continued: 'And hen I got here and they said his signs were improving I couldn't believe it. And now he's sitting up and talking.'

Roy told her he was very pleased and got up to go but she cried: 'No, you can't go yet. Tony was asking for you.' Sounding a little dismayed, Roy replied: 'Was he?' and she gushed: 'Yes, he said you were marvelous. You kept him strong.' He told her again that he had to go but she pleaded: 'Don't leave me. I'm still trembling from the shock. They are doing tests on him and I don't want to sit here on my own.' A little reluctantly Roy sat back down

In the shop, Peter tore into the stranger, telling him: 'You made a right lash up of that didn't you? He's upstairs now asking all sorts of questions and I don't know what to say. Anyway, anyone could turn up here claiming to be Lucy's dad. How do I know you're not a nutter?' He replied: 'It's be an odd thing to lie about but here, look.' He took out some documents and showed Peter his birth certificate, marriage certificate to Lucy's mother, an old passport with Lucy on as his daughter and a photo of he and Lucy together when he was younger.

Peter looked at it and replied: 'So you are who you say you are. The questions is why is such a lousy father who abandoned his daughter turning up on my doorstep telling me how to bring up my son?' He replied: 'Because I was a lousy father, because I abandoned her when she needed me.' Peter sneered: 'And now you want to make everything alright? Is that it?' He replied: 'I can't do that. It's too late, I'm not the man I was then. I'm remarried and my life is sorted now. Looking back, I think it's time I started putting something back...' but Peter turned away.

He settled a bet for a punter and called out: 'Right fellas, I'm back. If any of you want to place a bet I'm ready. The man told him: 'I'll wait over in the pub across the road. Maybe you can join me.' but Peter didn't even look at him and, slightly dejected, he walked out of the shop.

Breaking for a cup of tea, Gail asked Joe if he was coming in but he told her: 'I'll give her a wipe down with spirit first. I can start painting this afternoon.' He looked round to see David and his new girlfriend and smiled: 'Ey up, here comes trouble.'

Introductions were made all round and Gail told Zoe: 'I'm just making a cup of tea. Come inside and tell me all about yourself!' Zoe replied: 'Not much to tell really. What you see is what you get with me.' As they disappeared, Joe commented: 'Nice girl.' David watched her go and replied: "Yes. Yes she is.' Joe grinned: 'Ever stop talking?' and David laughed: 'Not yet, no.' and surprised Joe as he offered: 'Go on then. Give us a rag and I'll do the other side.'

Zoe cried: 'I never knew you were a boating family!' and Gail laughed: 'Neither did we! I don't look like this all the time by the way.' Joe laughed: 'Yes she does. You should see her when she's welding!' Zoe replied: 'The Queen used to do welding but me dad says she just posed for the pictures.'

Peter went back up to the flat where he found Simon asking Leanne: 'Did that man really love my mummy?' and her replying:: 'Of course he did. He was her daddy.' Peter asked her quietly if she would go down and watch the shop and she quickly headed for the door but paused as she reached it.

She listened as Peter told him: 'That man was one of your granddads, but he's not your proper granddad is he?' Simon frowned: 'Isn't he?' and he replied: 'No. Your real granddad is Granddad Ken cos he takes you to school, takes you to the park, reads you stories.' Simon replied that Isaac Berry had two granddads and Peter told him firmly: 'So do you but you only see one of them and that's an end to it.' Leanne told him that he should talk to him: 'You can understand him wanting to see his grandchild.' but he replied: 'Yeah, thanks for that Leanne. I'll think about it.'

Michelle popped into The Rovers and explained what the situation was to Liz and that she wouldn't be able to do her shift that evening. Liz was totally understanding about it and told her to get the little one back to her place and not to worry about it. She was just about to leave when Dev marched in, ordered a drink and asked: 'Has anybody seen that slime ball Jake today?' Michelle told him no and he cried: 'No, course you haven't cos he's hightailed it out of Weatherfield.'

Michelle asked how he could know that and was shocked as he cried: 'Because the thieving little toe rag has taken half my roof tiles with him so you've got a nice watertight home and I've got air conditioning I didn't ask for.' Liz opined: 'He's sounds like a right trouble maker don't you think, Michelle?' but Michelle didn't reply.

Julie met Jesse at the agreed time and climbed into his van only for them to spot Jason and Tina heading right for them. 'Quick! Cover me!' she cried as she slid down into the footwall and Jesse hastily threw a colourful sheet over her. He panicked as he then dropped the keys and, after retrieving them, looked up to found Jason at the front of the van. He nodded: 'Alright Jesse?' and Jesse blustered: 'Fine. Sorry, gotta go!' and sped away.

It was with some hesitation that Roy was led into Tony's room by Maria. As Tony cried: 'Roy, my hero!' she enthused: 'Doesn't he look well?' Tony held an arm out and cried: 'Roy, mate, take my hand.' Roy didn't move at first but then reluctantly walked to the bed and shook hands. Tony told him he owed him more than he could ever pay but Roy told him brusquely: 'You don't owe me anything. I only did what I was trained to do.' Maria sighed: 'I thought he'd be all tubes and that.' and Tony smiled: 'But here I am, large as life and twice as ugly.'

Roy looked very uncomfortable as she told him: 'I thought I was going to lose him just like I lost Liam. Me and Liam thought we had forever.' Tony cast a look at Roy then told her: 'You can go round in circles like that Maria. I'm here and I'm going to take really good care of myself from now on.' She cried: 'You promise? Life's so short.' and, his eyes meeting Roy's, Tony replied: 'Yes, it is.'

Maria went to get a coffee and Roy got up to leave. Tony cried: 'Don't go Roy. If you go, Maria won't be able to call you her hero any more.' Roy mumbled that he didn't hold with being called a hero and Tony smiled: 'I know, but please. Don't go just yet. I don't want to be left alone just yet.' Roy sat back down and Tony sighed: 'Thank you. Who'd have thought it eh? You and me. The Odd Couple.'

He continued: 'It's all a bit hazy, yesterday.' Roy replied: 'Drugs.' and Tony continued: 'And the pain. They say that when your life flashes before your eyes you don't know what you are seeing, thinking, feeling.' Roy mumbled that he was sure it was very traumatic. Tony told him: 'You don't know what you are dreaming and what you are remembering. What's real and what isn't.' Roy looked at him and replied, knowing what Tony was talking about, and replied: 'I see.'

Tony asked if he made any sense last night and Roy replied guardedly: 'On and off.' Tony told him he'd like to show him how grateful he was: 'I know you're not the kind of man to accept money.' Roy told him that would not be appropriate and Tony replied: 'How about a charitable donation then? St John's ambulance? Or the Bat Preservation Society? What do you think?' but Roy's jaw tightened and he replied very firmly: 'I think you should keep your money. I only did what anyone would have done.'

In the pub, Janice smiled: 'You didn't lose it all then? Kept enough back for a drink?' Mr. Hughes replied: 'Yes. I mean no, I didn't go to put a bet on. I was looking for my grandson, Simon Barlow.' Janice cried: 'You're Simon's granddad? Aw, he's a lovely lad.' He muttered: 'Under the bruises.' but lightened up as she she told him: 'That's his age isn't it? Boy's and bruises?' He looked more relaxed as she told him: 'That'll be his football. He never stops does that one.' She told Liz who he was and Liz smiled: 'He goes to school with my granddaughter. He's a smashing lad.'

Peter walked in and, catching the conversation, snapped: 'Discussing my son in the pub now?' He blustered: 'No, it was that lady. She gave me directions earlier and we were...' but Peter finished: 'Discussing my son.' Mr. Hughes offered to pay for his drink but Peter ignored him and paid for himself. He sighed: 'Look, I don't want to upset anybody. Not you, not your son. I'm doing this all wrong because I'm so desperate to do it right.' The man was clearly very upset and Peter looked rather thoughtful as he watched him go and sit down.

Jesse and Julie arrived back from the party having had a great time together. He enthused: 'And we even got two more bookings out of it. Saturdays are alright aren't they?' She told him it beat doing her washing. He put his hand on hers and told her: 'We make a great team though don't we?' She looked a little flushed and replied: 'We do. But now you'd better get out and let me get changed.'

Jesse climbed out immediately, the perfect gentleman, but didn't seem able to resist a peek in at the Carp posterior as she climbed into the back.

Lucy's dad told him he hadn't meant to barge in upsetting people: 'I just wanted to catch a glimpse and then I saw his face and...' Peter finished for him again: '.. and thought the worst.' He replied: 'I'm sorry, but I don't know you Peter. I didn't even know I had a grandson till a few weeks ago. It's an emotional thing, isn't it? I'm sorry.' Peter conceded the point and offered a handshake: 'Shall we start again?' George told him that Simon was a credit to him, black eye as well and Peter smiled: 'You should see his knees. A new graze every day. Look George, I don't want him thinking he's got this great new granddad if you are going to do a vanishing act.'

George replied earnestly: 'I'm not. You've no idea how much I've regretted leaving Lucy behind. It's haunted me for years and then when I finally plucked up courage to track her down I found out she was dead. It's taken me a few weeks to pick myself up from that and come looking for her baby, well her young lad.' Peter asked: 'And you had no idea about him till then?' George shook his head and told him: 'No, but I'm not the same person Peter, I swear. I won't make the same mistake again.' Peter told him: 'Well I'm going to have to talk to my family and if you visit him again, and that's if, I'm going to have him ready for you so he knows exactly who you are.'

George gave him a card and told him: 'My number. If you call the house and I'm not in leave a message with the wife. Eve knows all about Simon. I just want a chance to be a good Granddad. I can't make it up to Lucy. Whatever you decided, one way or the other, let me know. Please?' Peter assured him he would and the two men shook hands again as George left.

With Liam asleep, Michelle was sat watching TV when she suddenly heard a tapping sound. She turned the TV down but heard nothing and turned it back up. The tapping sounded again and, realised it was coming from outside, she headed over to the flat window.

To her astonishment, there was Jake at her window, perched atop a ladder. She asked what he was doing there and he smiled: 'Front doors are boring. All that ding song doorbell stuff.' She told him that Dev was after his blood but after a bit of teasing he confessed that he'd seen Dev who had agreed to pay him so had put his tiles back. She smiled: 'Good, so now go before you give me a bad reputation.' but he told her: 'I am just about to. My next job's in Glasgow.' She told him it was a long commute and looked disappointed when he told her: 'It won't be. They've got me a flat up there.'

She told him she would miss him but he smiled: 'Come with me. We're made for each other!' She told him to come back tomorrow but he replied: 'I'm hitting the road at five. Come with me?' She told him she had a son, a job and was babysitting and he shrugged: 'Then follow me on. It's called following your heart. We'll be alright.' She told him no and he pouted: 'You're not even going to think about it?'

She told him no again and to go before he woke the baby up. He started to climb down but then reappeared and smiled: 'Be warned. I will return to whisk you off your feet. We'll travel the world and make love on every continent.' They kissed slowly and then he slid down the ladder and called back to her: 'I mean it. I'll be back!'

Sensing what was on Roy's mind, Tony asked if there was something he wanted to say: 'That's the third time you've picked that magazine up.' Roy told him it was the only one there but Tony replied: 'You keep taking a deep breath as if you're about to say something.' Roy opened his mouth to speak but Maria breezed in with the coffees, apologising for being so long.

Roy seized the opportunity to go, telling her he had been there too long already. She told again how wonderful he had been and how grateful they both were.

Tony told her: 'I've been trying to persuade Roy to accept my thanks properly. So come on Roy. How about it? One of those charities you are keen on.'

Maria enthused: 'Yes Roy, how about your bats?' Tony nodded: 'Or not the bats. It can be anything you like.' but Roy looked extremely uncomfortable and told them both it really wasn't necessary.

Roy reluctantly replied: 'Well, perhaps the Weatherfield Conservation Society. We want to reintroduce the crested newt to the quarry.' Tony smiled: 'Well five grand should buy a few tin cans for them to hide under.' Maria kissed Roy and thanked him again but as he was about to leave, Tony cried: 'A gentleman's agreement. Sealed with a handshake.' He offered his hand and Roy, very reluctantly, went over and shook it before leaving the room quickly.

As he watched him go, Tony's face showed a great unease. He had seen first hand how principled Roy Cropper was over the life of a few bats. How could he possibly keep silent after hearing Tony confess to murder?
